Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Judges who can't be bothered
- By Saxon [gb] Date 27.01.09 10:29 UTC
Doesn't it infuriate you when you've won at a show and the judge doesn't submit a critique to the dog papers. I'm currently waiting for 6 critiques on my dogs, one of which is from Alfreton last July,(not much chance of ever seeing that one). If we have gone to the expense of giving a judge an entry at least they should have the courtesy to fulfil their obligation and write a critique.
- By newfiedreams Date 27.01.09 10:47 UTC
Just have to defend and agree to a point! It may not be the Judges fault that the critique isn't published...it could well be the papers themselves! When I have submitted critiques I also send a copy to the Show/Society Secretary...that way anyone who wants to know what I've written can get a copy!

On the other hand, I was incensed at one Show, where the Judge...a leading female 'name' couldn't be bothered to talk to anyone showing under her...she just looked and pointed...very rude, my friends daughter was showing my pup in a Puppy Stakes class, if I had been in the ring I would have said something!

What annoys me is when you show in a variety class and the judge can't be bothered going mud your dog properly! On one occasion the judge only went over the front half of my dog.

complain to the kennel club, I emailed them and they chased the critique for me and emailed it to me within 2 weeks, it was also published in the paper that week.  Ive got to chase one from Windsor Champ show, we won PG and im gutted there hasnt been a critique for it.

TUT don't ya know some of us have X ray vision! :-o ;-)

Hi saxon I agree with newfie - the dog press does not always publish crits, certainly not for open shows.  They have a deadline for accepting them also and not all judges will submit them in good time.

For champ shows or breeds at open level where only one or two have been judged by the same judge, personally I think it wiser for the judge to send a copy to the inviting society and the secretary of the breed club(s) too - that covers the judge's back should it for any reason not appear in print

I also put my crits onto dog biz where possible (they cover the major champ shows but not breed clu sows or open shows)  Personally I can't understand why more judges don't do that!

Couldn't possibly say who it was!!! No it wasn't that particular lady though...
- By echo [gb] Date 27.01.09 12:40 UTC
Know what you mean about the judges who just point.

I went under a top name lady judge who just pointed or waved hands.  Tried to explain I was partialy sighted and she just turned away when I asked her what she wanted me to do.  First time I have failed really badly and it put me off for months.

What does it take to utter triangle, wasn't asking for a kidney or anything just direction hard enough when you can't see, doubly hard when the judge won't talk to you :(

I'm still waiting for a write up 2 years ago, it was taken to the KC, and still there was nothing done about it, it was a breed show too!
And she's judged again, really pees me off, all we ask it they give us a critique of our dogs, not a brain transplant!

Is that breed club champ or open show level, Kenya?

What do the KC have to say about it then? Have complaints been put in for both shows?

Everyone I know who has put a complaint in has very promptly received the critique, so it does seem as if they do act on it quickly - although how useful the critiques are may be another topic entirely LOL.

I was just wondering what the next stage is, when a critique isn't forthcoming after a complaint.

Initials are CC!
- By Nova Date 27.01.09 13:43 UTC
Never mind it being nice to see what the judge thought of your exhibit there are times when you need the critique to find out just what the judge was looking for, and how on earth dog A beat dog B.
- By ClaireyS Date 27.01.09 13:46 UTC
lol, im so with you on that one :)
- By kenya [gb] Date 27.01.09 13:51 UTC
It was a Breed open show, and when questioned the judge said she had lost her critiques, and made alot of excuses, to which the secretary of the club, notified the KC, and they said they would deal with it, but she judged last year at a champ show with no cc's.
Annonying thing it was my puppy's first show, and she got BPIS, so what can you do??

Sometimes you wonder if the judge was at the same show you were at though  ;-) The critiques don't always ring true.........
- By rachelsetters Date 27.01.09 14:43 UTC
LOL - someone pm'd me - thank you - and don't think have come across her :)  thank you
- By newf3 [gb] Date 27.01.09 17:01 UTC
Im still waiting for two cticts.
One from a newfie breeder/judge at the club champ show and one from a guy who is looking for more dogs to judge, to no doubt process his judgeing carear and again at a club show (open this time) and neither have bothered to send a ctict ( evan to the breed club mag ) ( so far )
Which i find really rude as you would think in both cases that they would supply one.
- By NEWFIENOOK [gb] Date 27.01.09 17:09 UTC
I have had a few of those too, maybe we should have a system like in the continent , your crit is written there and then and given to at the show !! a bit long winded but a better way i think
- By newf3 [gb] Date 27.01.09 17:14 UTC
agree.
Unless its a bad one that makes you what to bop the jugde on the nose.LOL

At least one of our two breed clubs (possibly both but cant be certain) remove judges from their lists who fail to provide written crits.  Allowances are made in certain circumstances for them not appearing in the dog press but it is requested that if it's no longer possible for the dog papers to publish them, they be forwarded to the club's secretary for inclusion in the next newsletter.

I'm not aware if they report judges who fail to comply to the KC - hopefully they do...

IMO it is extremely discourteous to both the exhibitors and the inviting societies to fail to ensure crits are submitted and it is IME always part of the contract agreed by the judge at the time of invitation, even at open show level.  I've heard of some judges being fined by the KC but believe it likely to be the tip of the iceberg

I take them all with a HUGE pinch of salt because so many seem to emphasis good points I've never seen in the dogs in my breed!

I'm still waiting for Mia's critque when she won her title back in 2004 and Julie, who owns her younger sister, is still waiting for the critique when Mia's younger sister was made up last year!

I think for a year, the KC should monitor judges & judging from the exhibitors point of view.   Send a questionnaire out with each pass to be filled in after judging.    Not so people who don't win can write sour grapes comments but to monitor the politeness of a judge, their thoroughness, whether a critique is submitted etc. and then collate the information and repeat offenders made to resit their judging exams or moved from A lists to B.

That is awful, I have often asked the steward to tell the judge that I cannot see very well (registered blind actually) if I know they are a pointer and waver.

One of the nicest judges even without being told was Ellis Hulme when doing groups or stakes, mad it very clear who he wanted and what you were to do.

Stuart Mallard also came and tapped me on the shoulder when we won the champion stakes.
- By suepei [gb] Date 27.01.09 21:18 UTC
we have had a judge give out cc's in our breed 3 times now, 1 of them at crufts.
never has he done a write up on any of the show's.

Makes you wonder why they bother to judge at all.
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 27.01.09 21:23 UTC
The KC don't care if it's only an open show, I've tried that. :-(
