should dogs see the vet if theyve had a tick?
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 11.11.02 07:46 UTC
If you are not able to deal with it yes. :)

Guest, you said "had", does this mean the tick is no longer there? If you have pulled it off, keep a very close eye on the wound site. If any body parts are left in the wound at all, a nasty infection can take hold. If you removed the tick completely and in one piece, you should be ok.
If in doubt, seek out your vet.

Having been brought up with ticks......living on island of west coast of scotland!!! One or two ticks are not a problem to a healthy animal - if you don't discover them they will eventually fall off (full of blood and too heavy to stay onboard). If you do pull a tick off, make sure you do get the whole tick and not leave the head behind as this may well cause infection. Ticks are horrendous things and I have seen the devestation caused to sheep when they are covered externally and internally with ticks - normally ends up in death. Long coated dogs - difficult to detect a tick until it gets big! In some parts of Scotland, if you went to the vet every time you found one tick you would be broke within a few weeks!!

Just out of interest - found a tick on my leg the other day - I was horrified, I can tell you, that I'm just as attractive as my dogs - thought they were much more attractive than me!!

Mind you, I haven't been sprayed with Frontline - yet........

Jo do you know how long it was on your leg?

Leigh - I know I've got trousers on most of the time, but I do have my annual bath sometimes, and that's when I take them off and find this sort of thing (shock horror)!!!!:O :D

Thought the dogs picked them up by direct contact, but my legs haven't seen the light of day since........

I found a tick on my leg ages ages ago - yuck! It was a horrible feeling. It was only titchy so I dapped it with some frontline and got Rob to pull it off! He's had one in a very "delicate" place as well which he found very hard to get off!

lol - makes sense now :D :D

If I ever go counting capperwotsits I'll make sure I visit the ladies first :D :D :D

By the way - don't they make a wonderful noise (capperwotsits that is - not ticks or Rob )

Sara :)
