Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / the tie!
- By Dill [gb] Date 25.01.09 11:13 UTC
Thought I'd try to gather some information and opinions before I write to the publisher/writer/other of a book ;)

In the book it's stated that the bulbus glandis is at the tip of the dog's penis  and that the tie is called the 'knot' - an expression I have never heard in my whole life ;)

Have you ever heard of this ?  has anyone you have ever known called it the knot?

I don't know where they have got their information from but if it's incorrect then it needs to be corrected ;)

If you have read the book then you'll know what I'm talking about

Sorry Just checked again and apparently it's called 'knotting' !!!!

Just wondering how old this expression is supposed to be?

I have a diagram in front of me (P171 of Veterinary Notes for Dog Owners) which clearly shows that the bulbus glandis is not at the tip but is at the base (where we all know it to be!). The same page refers to the 'tie'; it's also called the tie in 'Dog Breeding' by E. Fitch Daglish, published in 1961. I've never, ever heard it referred to as 'knotting'.

Well the knot is an expression used for the base of the dogs penis, it swells like a knot, hence knotting, however that is just a description of the males penis, not an expression used instead of the word tie, tie is used to express both the males knot and females also clamping to make a tie.  So not really an old expression, just an explanation of the studs swelling. ;-)

Seems to be a term used on the internet, foolishly just searched ( did not visit) , horrible sites :(
- By Dill [gb] Date 25.01.09 12:55 UTC
thank goodness for that!   I thought maybe I was going mad!

Going to write to a certain Celeb who is associated with this book and direct him to Black's veterinary dictionary LOL  after all if he covers this subject in his programme he's going to look more than a little silly ;) and while I'm sure he doesn't mind looking silly on purpose, it's another thing when it's out of sheer ignorance and misinformation  LOL

According to the book, this is where the term 'get knotted' comes from :rolley eyes:  (where is that smiley?)

Well it sure isn't the tip but the base.  Certainly never heard it cllled anything but bulbis Glandis or the gland.

I've never heard it called anything but the tie and certainly you only have to locate a dog - any male dog will do, and he'll be happy to show 'all and sundry' where his bulbus glandis is, whether you want to know or not LOL  so there's really no excuse for such inaccuracy ;)

Was hoping some of the older/more senior brigade or those who know older breeders would be able to answer as well ;)

The bulbus glandis (also called a knot) is an erectile tissue structure on the penis of canid mammals. During mating, the tissues swell up and cause the dogs to stick together (tie) for some time after the ejaculation

What I'm trying to find out is has the tie ever been called 'knotting' ???  at any point in time by experienced dog breeders ?

It isn't a term I've ever heard, but I may be too young to know it if it's a very old term ;)

ps good site :-D

It wasn't called that in the 1970s, which is as far back as my personal experience (dog-breeding wise) goes! It was called 'tying' in my books going back to the 60s.

Could there be some confusion with the phrase 'tying the knot'

possibly a transference in translation somewhere, from another language?

I'm not very old but been 'at it' - so to speak, for a fair wee while.

Never heard of Knotting
Sound like it comes from the same canine dictionary as 'Studding' (as in - 'studding yer dog' )  :-)

I did see a magazine in Amsterdam ( in an ordinary newsagent I must add) called 'Knotty' but the picture on the cover consisted of ladies and ropes !!

It's called the tie in my oldest book published in 1951.   I tried to look at the online version of the Oxford English Dictionary, but that was less than helpful ;)
