Hi all...my beautiful bitch has just given birth to 7 puppies....5 of which were stillborn.....little boy is very weak, girl is strong, but faded this morning...Given the liver juice method, also glucose, and lactol....havent slept for 3 days....(pups nearly 3 days old now!)..I am trying soooo hard to keep them alive,but i need some advice, and moral support...please can somebody help, as i feel like im going nuts!...phone tracey (me) on 07903359273....please someone help...ive run out of ideas xxxxx

oh lord, I don't know what to suggest just wanted you to know I'm thinking of you.
I assume your vet is involved, can they offer any advice?

THERE MUST BE SOMETHING WRONG FOR HER TO HAVE SO MANY STILL BORNS. TAKE HER TO THE VET AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, WITH THE PUPS, MUM MAY HAVE SOMETHING LEFT INSIDE HER. IT COULD BE SOMETHING REALLY SIMPLE THAT YOU HAVE OVERLOOKED.

i also say get her and pups to the vet, I always get newborns and mum checked over just to make sure nothin is wrong, its unusual for so may to die.

I have no advice myself but wondered if this article on fading puppies is of any use? I wonder if whatever makes this bitch have stillborn pups has prevented her passing on colostrum to them too?

Hi Tigger, yes it is tasha....vet advised all ok, but as he said it was a phantom, i now have no faith in them.....Bless her, she picks up pups and puts them in my lap when i go into whelping room...i honestly think she knows im trying to help...i dont know what else to do...im frantic!!!

I can't add any miracle cure other than what has already been offered, keep them warm, hydrated, try to feed, make sure they are toileting, your bitch sounds like a good mum, I take it she is caring for them are they strong enough to suckle at all? When puppies start to fade sometimes the most experienced can do nothing but wait and hope, it is sometimes just out of our hands.

I'll have my fingers crossed for you both, so sad when these things happen, wishing you all the very best.

If it was my pups I'd want them put on antibiotics (synulox drops can be used that early) -got to be worth a try. All sorts of infections can enter the body at birth, for instance via the umbilical cord, and it doesn't always look obvious.

If you have no faith in your vet then you must find another one.  It is impossible for people to know exactly what is ailing your bitch and puppies without the benefit of examining them.

This seems so like the previous litter this bitch had.  Was she screened for infections following that?

Sorry to hear you are having problems. It looks like the mum my have to be spayed after this litter as something is wrong with her, after losing all the last litter as well, this could mean her milk my have something wrong with it too.and could be harming her pups, speak to the vet about it .you mite want to hand rear the pups  to be on the safe side

Was the bitch inoculated for Canine Herpes Virus.  As this has happened twice I do wonder if this is the problem here.

I am sorry to hear about your pups, it is hard to advise when you do not know the bitch ect; It does sound that you bitch may have an infection, this can be the reason she lost her pups. If she has ,the pups need to see the vet a.s.a.p the other main killer of pups are cold. They must be kept at 80 deg, If they are feeding and mom has plenty of milk and you and mom are stimulating them to wee and poo, Are moms eyes a little glassy? or glazed. She may have some thing left inside her. This can poison her blood and milk. It may be a good idea to have them all overhauled at another vets, I would.

Many years ago we had a similar problem and were advised to give the pups 1/2 teaspoon of Natural LIVE yoghurt 2 to 3 times a day, it also helps to replace natural antibodies that may have been lost due to bitch having been given anti biotics.

Hi to all you lovely people who have given me advice...just a quick update to let you know how things are going..One lovely lady on here sent me a private post with a phone number of a lady very experienced in these matters so gave her a ring, thursday evening, and we arranged for me to take the pups up to her on friday, so she could give me anti-biotics, liquid life-aid, and equip me with the necessarys to tube feed (ive never done this before)...On friday morning 3am, i sadly lost the little boy puppy...so, equipped with hot water bottle, electrolytes, and a very understanding mum and dad, we set off on our 200 mile round trip with Darcy (girl puppy now has a name as she now a permanent part of my family)...We returned at 8pm sat night, and Darcy was weak, weighed 7.3 oz and was constipated, had swollen glands that made it impossible for her to swallow, and was very dehydrated...24 hours later, she weighs 8.3 oz, has a shiny, sweet smelling coat, and i have to pin her down to tube feed her as she is so lively! also, she has had a drink from a bottle today after nearly sucking off the end on my finger!!! Tasha (mum) is upset, as she knows she is still here, but thankfully isnt tearing down doors, but i cant let them together again, until im sure Darcy is fully recovered, but Tasha is happy with me giving her a towel with Darcy's smell on...I am very hopeful now of a future with a puppy that is an incredible little fighter, and just want to send the message DONT GIVE UP.....miracles really do happen! I know Darcy isnt out of the woods yet, but ive every confidence she will make it! x

Yes, I agree as wonderful as it is that tracey32uk has just driven 200 miles to get her lifesaving items, I feel it could have been collected at a veterinary's just the same along with blood tests etc.

However, I am so pleased that the pup is doing well. I shall keep my fingers crossed.

Not many vets have the experience of raising whelps that the lady Tracey has been to see has and infact many would have said that there is nothing to be done.
As to the question of canine herpes (with the limited I will admit) research I have done, herpes is a danger to the puppies when the dam is infected during pregnancy. Once the dam has been infected, further pregnancies are not as likely to be affected as she should have made enough antibodies to keep the virus in check.

If she is not a vet how has she been able to prescribe antibiotics?   Or is she a vet, just a further away one? :-)

I don't know for sure but I can take a pretty good guess at the identity of the lady the OP visited - she is renouned for saving fading whelps and folks travel looooong distances for her help :)

Great news. I too can have a fairly good guess at who the lady in question is and I'd use her myself if I ever had to, for sure! I know of at least one Champion dog in one of my breeds that would not be alive if it wasn't for her.

Even I can guess who it is and I've only had one litter which had no problems - this lady (if we are right) is famous and rightly so! :-)

if its the same lady i was told to ring when my pups where in trouble ....she the best and helped me soooo much !!!:)

None-the-less this lady seems to have been extremely helpful and I understand she has helped many, so good to know she can be contacted and comes highly recommended.   I just feel a little worried that our OP is completely cutting out her vet or any other local vet.

alot of vets now days dont know how to help fading puppy , if u get a good vet dont let them go ,my vets are good but when it comes to fading puppy thay dont have a clue !!

We give collate and it has helped with poorly puppies...

I don't think many vets would have the first clue on how to deal with newborns unfortunately.

Hi,  Id just like to get a few things straight....
To teri, trishlovesmiley, lucydogs, whitelilly, to name but a few...Thank you for your support.. and i know you understand that sometimes, you have to do anything you can to save a pup. I'll try to justify myself (not that i should have to!) The reason i went to this lovely lady (who isnt a vet, but knows more about whelping and newborn pups than any vet ive come across) is that she was my last chance, and someone on here was kind enough to give me her number!
My vet argued the toss with me about her being overdue, and wouldnt induce (even though i told him id clearly felt at least 2 pups) He is supposed to be a very experienced vet, but couldnt even find a foetal heartbeat....then i was told by such vet, that "what will be will be"...and after losing the rest, wasnt likely the last 2 would survive..so i took another route as a last resort.
To gundoggal....no, she isnt qualified, but works under the umberella of HER vet (who, fortunately, is a little more experienced, and openminded than most!)
To Isabel...she will give them to you if she KNOWS your puppy needs them, and believe me, this woman is worth 100 vets when it comes to newborn pups!
Just to clarify...My beautiful, fat, time-consuming puppy would be DEAD now if it wasnt for this woman, she didnt charge me for her time, she gave advice freely, and she has been a constant support for us just for the love of dogs, she taught me so much, and was a total inspiration, and if i get slagged of for taking this route, then so be it...as Darcy is wobbling over my arm as im writing this, trying to suckle my hands, all fat and healthy, looking like a shiny, black mini me of her mum...i thank god for people who arent afraid to take a risk to help other people with sick puppies.
Anyway, Darcy is a little miracle, and doing fine, thank you x

hi tracey my heart goes out to you ,i spoke with this lady and she is an angel she knows her stuff and my vet said the same to me :( but with her advise we only lost 1 pup and that was before i spoke with her ,i pray your baby grows to be stronge with every day that comes and im sure she will :) ,i would do the same if needed i would have gone to her if i had to beleave me

I'm sure she will but she is not qualified to prescribe them.  I too believe I know who this is and I am sure she can work wonders with her knowledge and husbandry but the fact remains she is not a vet so what would concern me is where the antibiotics have come from.  If she has a vet who works alongside her fair enough but if she has not she cannot be getting them from a legitimate supplier.  Medicines sold on the internet for instance are widely faked and could do more harm than good. 
I do feel on that side of things at least you should be seeing a vet not least to have your bitch examined given her history.  You really need to be finding a new vet anyway if you feel you cannot trust your present one.

I have the reciept, and price tag for the anti-biotics...im trying to find a new vet, and will be having tasha spayed...and if you have been keeping up with darcy's story, you will definately see that they are not doing any harm! Sometimes, vets arent the best option...the ones that know a lot about newborns are few and far between!!

It sounds like you've gone through the mill with this little pup but I am glad she is doing well.

I don't know who this woman is but I would like to think if I was ever in need that I could go to someone like her.

Whether or not she's qualified to give out antibiotics it sounds to me as though if she hadn't and also hadn't given you advice then you wouldn't have that little pup right now.
