Topic Dog Boards / Health / Zuma - Metacam....advice please
- By tatty-ead [gb] Date 24.01.09 19:00 UTC
Zuma was started on Metacam on Friday 16th because of severe reaction to the internal stitches.  some time over that weekend he started to cough, only once or twice at first.
It sounds as if he is clearing his throat not a 'hacking cough' It has got worse over the last day or two but he is still eating enthsiasticaly.

He has not been done for kennel cough.....?
He has been known to mouth/squash snails but that was spring/early summer not recently.....
Coincidence on timing with Metacam?.....

Anyone with any thoughts please

It may well be Kennel Cough, think it unlikly to be the Metacam but I would speak to the vet about it particulaly if there are still stiches present.

Hi Jackie, going to phone/visit vet on Monday (yet again) but thought I would ask on here in the mean time, He had the surgery on 18 Dec and only had internal stitches but the scar line got hard and hot udue to a reaction....there shouldn't be any stitches there now as the op was over 5 weeks ago.

Hi, I would definitely mention to the vet that your dog has a habit of eating snails. Ask if there is a possibility he may have picked up lungworm or heartworm. Both can be caught from eating snails.

Don't think there is a problem with the stiches, so yes, it could be kennel cough or it could be something he has picked up from snails. The vet needs to check him out the KC will go without treatment but the infections caught from snails need treatment.

Once had a bitch in for spaying. Within a few days of getting her home she started to cough. When I took her back to the vets he said "oh yes, kennel cough, she probably caught it here ..." Then had the cheek to charge me for the tablets!

Hi there, like what has been said, i think its a coincidence about the Metacam, my dog and dogs before him have had Metacam and the only reaction they got was loose stools  and sometimes the runs. Your vet will be the best person to talk to hun, i do know that internal stitches take a lot loger to heal and the hard tissue around the scar maybe adhesions,.
I wish Zuma the best of health and good luck for Monday. best wishes Tracy.x

Oh also forgot to mention, when Tyler got kennel cough, i was told to give him Benylin (non drowsey) it realy did help him. good luck.x

As Tracey ays, if it is benylin then dry cough non drowsey is great.  However I would seek veternary advice first incase it's lungworm or heartworm.

Hi All,
Update on Zuma, we went to the vets this evening, Vet called him in, I said 'he is in car -think he may have Kennel cough'. Vet - 'oh no I don't believe this'. She came out and did a quick check in the car, 'No not KC - bring him in' Had a good check and he is now on treatment for lungworm. Its getting a major problem round here (Suffolk) even her own dog got it!!!).
I do hope this is the last for a while as this was his 8th visit in 6 weeks

glad to hear your vet picked up on this right away as lungworm is a killer if not treated , theres not many cases of it here but i alwas tell my pups new familys about it so they know what to look out for !!! hopeing your boy a speedy recovery x

Zuma is doing ok thanks, KC or lungworm were the two main alternatives I was thinking of, the cough didn't sound like the description of KC in 'Blacks' but the newest edition doesn't have lungworm in dogs listed for symptoms as it is such a new problem in this country, the vet said she has seen loads of dogs recently with it and has even had to treat her own lab for it. The problem with the stiches has cleared up fine and the scar is fading quite rapidly.........where is a lump of wood for me to touch!!!
