Thanks to everyone who commented, I can see its raised many sensitive issues and I have read all the posts. If we continue along the same vein on this post then im sure it will be locked, so please dont start arguing again on this one...this is just to let you know the latest.
It appears that the 1st vet wasnt 100% sure about her being inpup....so yesterday my cousin went to another vet in maidstone who had a scanner, and the result was that she was too obese to get a result as they couldnt see through the fat!!! Having spent 4 hours with my own vet this morning (dont ask!) I mentioned it to him and he found this odd as modern scanners should be well capable. However I am only getting my cousins version 2nd hand so maybe something was lost along the way. I shall speak with her tonight. her/their ONLY interest is in saving the bitch. Nothing else. I am going to suggest she has it xrayed and if its def in whelp, to have an instant spay and remove the non viable pups. If not in whelp I will still suggest they take the risk of a spay, as they are clearly unable to manage a simple thing like one small dog :( :( I will post further when I have spoken to her tonight.

Sounds like sound advice to me Sam. Very weird indeed to say they don't see through the fat on a scan -it works for people, surely it should for dogs?

I can't help it..... hope all hounds are ok?

I'm glad they're seeking vet advice and listening to you. Thanks for keeping us updated.

Thanks for the update too, wondered what was happening. :-)

Playing devils advocate here, the vet if she is pregnant thought she was maybe 50ish days, but now is not even sure that she is in whelp, so I'm just wondering why they thought she was pregnant in the first place?

Do you think that she is just extremely obese, and there never were any pups, that the first vet may just have thought it had to be a pregnancy due to her size?

Curiouser and curiouser, I know you can't answer me as you know no more than us, but it is all very strange.

If she isn't in whelp, I would advise a strict diet and exercise before being spayed, she needs that weight got rid of first, before an operation.

It could be that this bitch has silent seasons or none at all, it does happen, (maybe that is why they have never noticed) though with silent ones the vulver generally still swells, oh this is a real mystery.

If they are willing to Xray her they will already have her under anaesthetic which will be a big part of the risk (and cost) anyway.

Sometimes it is a struggle for people and some women, particularly in early pregnancy, have to have internal ultrasound scans   Not sure a dog would cooperate for one of them!

Hi Sam,

I didn't get the opportunity to comment on your previous thread but have read through the important points so thanks for the update.  In an ideal case scenario this will be an obesity rather than pregnancy problem.  I know that humans who are too over weight to have ultra sounds require CT scans instead which I'd imagine would be unavilable except through a vet hospital perhaps and even then rather pricey to establish pregnancy.

Fingers crossed for all concerned
regards, Teri
