Topic Dog Boards / General / A nice smelling dog Shampoo?
- By TrishlovesMiley [gb] Date 20.01.09 14:56 UTC
Well as some of you know my little pup is 4 months old and up til now she has just smelt of wash powder or conditioner because I wash her beds and blankets weekly. She is now getting to the age where she is starting to smell well like a dog, and although i love her and my home is hers too I prefer it to smell, well, nice. I don't want people to think my house smells of dog as soon as they walk in the door. It doesn't at the minute but I don't want to be one of these dog owners that get used to the smell of their dogs and don't notice it anymore! My mum is one of these people. So back to my original topic, does any1 know of a good puppy shampoo which smells nice. I hate the ones that smell of disinfectant!

You could go for a fancy one, there are quite a few grooming ranges out there, some natural/organic/proffesional. I use the puppy shampoo from Johnsons, smells fine and as they get older I use the deodourising on from their range too. Both are inexpensive.

However have you also looked into wether the smells could be coming from the pups ears/wrinkles? Do you clean these weekly? Are they dried thoroughly after? This is a common source of whiffs in pugs.

Hi thanks, no the smell is not her ears or wrinkles, I use a cotton bud under her nose wrinkle and i wipe her ears using a bit of cotton wool with warm boiled water i only do this once a week tho actually i cotton bud her wrinkle about every other day. Bless her
She doesn't actually smell yet but there is a doggy aroma coming lol.
I think i will need a 'designer'brand as i am fussy with smells. :( I will look out for your suggestion tho, didn't know Johnsons did a dog range. Was contemplating using my kids Johnsons baby shampoo, my mum uses that on her westie, not that that is a good example actually her dogs are pungent! lmao

i used this stuff - i get the coconut one, although i might have to try the apple one! It's quite concentrated too, so you don't need much.

<<a good puppy shampoo which smells nice>>

Try Redcape www.redcape.co.uk

I use Quistel for our WSS and would recommend their products to anyone--http://www.quistel.com/information/index.php?page=groom-dog

We use Cowboy Magic - it smells really nice, and keeps the coat shiny but coarse (doesnt soften that is!!). It is meant for horses, but does an excellent job on dogs - you can use it on yourself as well.
It is a bit expensive - buy it at dog shows or on EBay - I just bought several bottles when on holiday in Florida (about 1/4 of UK price).

What you feed them on can affect them too.  I feed mine on Naturediet and Burns or James Wellbeloved.  The only thing that is a bit smelly is their feet!

Oh but thier feet smell wonderfull!! am I the only one who regularly sniffs dog feet? I think they have so many variables, little whiffs of many things...I love to sniff my dogs feet...Dear me I think I am weird!!!!
Aileen, dog foot sniffer!!!!

I must admit I like how my dogs smell too.  Their feet smell like savoury snacks!  Maisie's coat smells lovely and clean and has a slight jasmin note.  Billy smells a little stronger but neither of them have that real 'doggy' smell and people tell me that my house does not smell of 'dog'.

I use Johnsons baby shampoo on my pups up till they are about4 or 5 months old, It is mild, rinses out easily, no stings, and smells lovely.  After that I change to something which suits coat testure and colour.  At the moment Winifred (Black Pug) is using Aveda, expensvie but smalls fab and leaves a wonderful shine,  and the fawns are using something a little more mundane - Elvive Nutrigloss, which does leave them silky and with a good shine.  For the American Cockers it depends on coat type, and they are also are always done with conditioner too.  Do sometime use "professional" dog shampoos, such as the Whal products, but generally prefer to get the gallon containers from the hairdressers whloesaler for routine washing - have been using a coconut one for years which smells yummy and washes them very well.  I hate the dog shampoos you can buy retail, far to high a detergent content.  OK if you wash very unfrequently I suppose, as that is what they are formulated for - to strip everything out of a coat.

Hi, I just used Johnsons baby shampoo, my mums vet recommended it for her Westie years ago. It's mild enough for babies so I used it. I'm not that keen on the smell to be honest, but her coat is clean and she's soft so did the trick. I don't really intend washing her that often. Maybe if she just starts to smell a bit but generally i wash her bedding weekly so she doesn't.
