hey guys

Myself and my boyfriend purchased a westie pup yesturday, he was born in September and was the last in the litter, we have took him home and noticed in comparisoon to other westies he is very thin, he isn't eating much at the minute and has a case of diahorrea, we are concerned due to the fact thAt he moans at night with what we think is sore ears, he rubs his ears with his paws and makes almost a crying noise, he won't let us touch them and there is tiny red scabs on the ears, he pants heavily when in pain also!!!! Can you please help us.... We don't no what is the case of this pain, we bought him of a breeder. We have never had a westie before!!

Is it also true that you should not feed westies any other food but dog food as their skin is very sensitive and some food is to rich for his skin

Many thanks

Your puppy needs to see a vet - and fast!
- By Merlot [gb] Date 13.01.09 02:39 UTC
I think you need to get your pup to the vet as soon as possible. It sounds like he has a bad infestation of ear mites and who knows what with his tum. He will cry at night for a while as he is missing his familiar surroundings, but the ear scratching and dire-rear are not right and he needs treatment soon.
Have you tried to talk to the breeder? they should have made sure these things were dealt with before selling him...I hate to say it but it seems like a case of bad breeding (Just for the money perhaps?).
Did you do any reserch into breeders?. I hope this is not going to turn into a horror story but it has all the makings of one. Get pup to the vet asap tomorrow and then speak to the breeders. They have a legal responcibilty to make sure the pup they sell you is fit and healthy so make sure they know as soon as you can what the problems are and see what they are prepared to do about it.

As with any new puppy you need to take him to the vet within a day or two to be checked over for good health. Most pups get slightly loose bowels for a while as a result of the stress of moving, the change of water and (often) a change from the diet he was being fed before. But they shouldn't have problems with their ears, so those need immediate (today) vet attention. To be honest no pup should be sold with a condition like that - it should be treated before it leaves for its new home, at the breeder's expense. Has he had his vaccinations? Did you meet his mother?

What sort of breeder did he come from? A specialist who concentrates on one or two breeds, usually in their home, and with evidence of show success; someone who breeds litters from their pets to make a bit of money; or a kennel with several breeds and puppies available most of the time?

Your pup needs to see a vet as soon as possible - definately today.

Poor little poppet, please let us know how he gets on at the vet.

Yes def get him to a vets straight away!!

We have a9 month old westie that we have had since 2 months and he had diahorrea and bloody stools and it turns out he just had too much bacteria in his tummy. He had two courses of medication and is fine now.

He also cried at night for the first couple of nights but is fine now. He needs to get his ears seen too as it isn't right.

Hope everything works out OK.

Id get to the vets and be in the phone to this 'breeder' you got him from. Did you not notice his ears when you visited the pup? Did you have any contract or health guarentee for the first week? Make sure you worm him, gets his first vaccs i wouldnt trust the breeders if they say hes had them done. If it was me i would return the puppy you have only had him for a day and it might make the breeders think twice, demand your purchase price back on the vets fees or you will take them to court as the dog was definately unfit for sale.

Louise

I would research your breeders a little more next time and what to look for in a pup/breeder. Make sure you get a health guarentee.

No reputable breeder in any breed would sell a puppy that is ill, I have westies, did you buy the pup through one of the breed clubs, or out of a newspaper advert?
Most of us dont need to advertise its all word of mouth.

Sounds like ear mites, dont like the dihorrea part especially if its got any blood in it, I hope for your sake this pup does not have parvo.

Keep us informed on how you get on at the vets please.

You will get plenty of help on this board, so keep on posting.

hey guys

Took all your advice and took him to the vet, his ears were trapped with wax and were causing him great pain, he got them serenged and he's as happy as the flowers in may!!! He got his injection and returns next week for his buster, he got weighed him and he is 1.8 kilo (about a bag and half of sugar) is this normal for a westie pup born in September??? He has improved in his eating and his stools are getting harder due to the fact we removed the milk from his meal, does this do them any harm???

We purchased him from a dealer which in found in a newspaper advert, he breeds westies and he gave us papers and a 6 month health check guarantee, thank you all for your help, could u please answer those short questions for me please????

Many thanks again
Il keep you's up to date on any other problems

> he's as happy as the flowers in may!!!

That's great news :)

There is no reason why he should be having milk with his meals, so don't worry about cutting that out.

I have no idea what the average weight of a westie is, sorry, but if you give his age in weeks somebody else may be able to help you on that. Did you ask the vet about his weight? Even if he is lighter than the 'average' westie it's no problem as long as he is a healthy weight for his build (ie, not too thin or too fat) :)

Glad your puppy is feeling better, but the breeder should have checked over the puppy before he/she went to his new home!
Hope you have telephoned the breeder?

Hopefully, he'll put on weight now, and getting on being a puppy!

All the best

This pup should had received it's vaccinations months back *shakes head* does not sound a good breeder.  Also vet should not vaccinated that pup until the vet waited at least a week until ears and diarrhoea has cleared up, you only vaccinate a healthy dog *shakes head*

Dogs have trouble digesting cows milk and it can terrible diahorear and other health problems, did the breeder advice giving milk?

What did your vet say about the pups weight?
- By lumphy [gb] Date 14.01.09 17:28 UTC
Hi

Hope I have got this wrong. You are saying you have a 5 month old pup weighing 1.8 kilos I work that out to be 4 pounds surley not.  Also concerned your vet gave first innoculation while pup has diarrhoea, mine wont jag unless 100 % happy as it can effect the innoculations.
- By Ollie [gb] Date 15.01.09 15:08 UTC
Hey

Yea, that would be right, this is what the vet has informed my partner, he is light and you can feel each of his ribs. the vet did not seem concerned by his weight and he informed us to remove him from the milk which the breeder had told us to give him.
Is this not a healthy weight for a pup???

What can you do to help puppy wind??? He farts alot!!! sorry for being a bit rude!!!

hi not a expert but i would think he should be double his weight for his age.  4 pound for a 5 momth pup is very light.

As for the wind what are you feeding him?
- By Ollie [gb] Date 20.01.09 01:12 UTC
we started feeding ollie on ceasar however moved him ova to a mealed food were u add water I fink it's called brina thou not 100% sure!!! Any suggestions for the wind and he also is humping alot, is he a bit young for this??? Many thanks for all ur help!!!

If he's been on milk then this could be causing the wind - or it could be the food - I'm not familiar with 'Brina' is it Beta??

Your pup should be on a good quality puppy food and about 3  or 4 meals a day - as he's underweight I'd say 4 meals for the time being ;)

If the wind has started after changing his food then that's could be the cause ;)  It can be trial and error finding a food that suits your pup, and you should change over gradually over a couple of weeks to give his tum chance to get used to the food.

James Wellbeloved do a puppy food with very small kibbles (Turkey and Rice) which should be very easy on his tum ;)  there is also a good feeding guide on the back to help you give the right amount :)

Puppies hump, it's a fact, and boy puppies love to hump LOL  just distract him with a toy and he should grow out of it - eventually ;)
