What are your thoughts on the Canine Herpes vaccine

Undecided ?

I have used it as a precautionary measure on bitches that I have been informed have reabsorbed or lost litters on previous matings, with I have to say inconclusive results. It is difficult to say.Bitches miss or re absorb or abort or loose otherwise viable litters at a few weeks old for a variety of reasons. One of the major causes of fading puppy which many people have previously associated with CHV is down to straight forward bad husbandry.
I have had experience of a few bitches which have been scanned or known to be relaxin tested in pup which have gone on to miss.On the next mating they have been progesteone tested from day 21 onwards. All have shown a low level of png,ie much lower than that which is required to continue a viable pregnancy. These bitches have been treated with depo progesterone - ie injected with a progesterone substitute and gone on to produce health pups.

Do you think that is wise?  I can understand the importance of subfertility treatment for humans due to the psychological needs but for animals I do feel fecundity should be a criteria in the choice of breeding stock.

I dont know you may have a good point

I dont wish to get involved in any particular debate all I can say is we have had results in preventing premature abortion or reabsorbtion by ensuring that a bitch in pup maintains an adequate level of progesterone to continue with an otherwise viable pregnancy.

I can't help feeling offering such a service ought to include counselling the client on the implications.

Sorry if I offended
I am only stating that one of the reasons for no pups or reabsorbtions could possibly be down to a problem with the bitch having a problem with maintaining the required level of progesterone needed to sustain pregnancy, and the fact that it is a simple procedure to test for and very easily to treat, with no adverse complications to the bitch.

I dont wish to offend in any way and i quite understand that if nature intended a bitch to have a healthly litter then it would happen in any case without any intervention and maybe in cases of complications, then it is just natures way any maybe should be left alone.

That may solve a problem in the short term but my concern would be to the offspring.  Most litters are for the purpose of perpetuating a line and this does not seem to be something that you would wish to pass on in the females.  It also seems to me to have similar implications to AI which the KC restricts in use in consideration of possible compromise to natural furtility.
