Hi, A bit of knowledge needed please!!

I have a 14 week old Great Dane Puppy. She has been great since she joined us and no problem at all. However, she has just this last couple of days developed a bad case of the runs (Sorry cant spell dihorrea, see told you!!) She still has all her energy, eats well, does not look un well at all. Im totally puzzled. Is there anything that you give your pups/dogs when this happens?? I am keeping everything spotlessly clean and disenfected each time she does it. Its a real shame, bless her, she can hit the wall from 6 paces!!! :(

If she were mine I would want the vet to take a look, puppies can dehydrate very quickly.

Are you sure that you aren't giving her too much food ?  Sometimes that can cause Dire Rear ;)

Have you changed her food recently?  This can cause Dire Rear in young pups, a slow change over is needed.  Or if the food is new to her it could just be it disagrees with her tum ;)

I give Bio Yoghurt to any of my dogs that has loose motions/dire rear (very rare occurance) - as long as the dog can tolerate milk then it helps the right gut flora take over ;)  about a tablespoon on her food is all it takes.

If you really are stumped, and it doesn't clear quickly, then best she sees the vets as pups can go downhill fast ;)

Thanks Nova & Dill.

I have owned dogs all my life and if I thought for a minute that she needed a vet to look at her, she would be there!! Things have improved a wee bit since my last post, He last motion was more Mr Whippy than Gravy (Sorry, dont know how else to describe it!!!) So I think we are on the mend :)  I will keep a close eye on her though. Her food has not changed and I have only increased her daily amounts to match her growth. May try the bio yoghurt though to help things along.  Thanks again!! ;)

Is it possible she's chewing plants in the garden?

there are plenty of plants that can cause Dire Rear and tummy upsets ;) there's a list of them on the web if you google ;)

Good to hear she's improving ;)

i have to agree with Nova, i would take her to the vet, puppies dehydrate very quickly, and anything more than a few days would worry me. just my thoughts...

Hi GG1, not spoken in a while, hope your Dane is ok, I am sure it is just a little something that may of upset their tummy.

I have a pup at the moment I am looking after, and he has the runs today, so have given him a little rice and chicken and have reduced his puppy formula milk, he seems fine in himself but will keep an eye on him.

Be good to catch up some time GG1

Another thing we do is introduce rice into their diet, first more rice than food then less and less rice until they are back to normal again.

I think there is a bug doing the rounds all three of my girls have recently had upset tums at the same time with no change of food or treats or titbits so it must have been a bug.
I had been to boston with one of them and think she may have picked it up there and passed it around .

Thanks everyone, I think you may be right. Pup is really well now and back to her normal bouncy braindead self (But I would not have her any other way, lol  :) )
