Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Very Skinny puppy..help

Hi

I wrote a while back about my 3 month old puppy *Fozzie* possible Chicken intolerance and his diarrhea problems...well I now have this under control and he's doing lovely firm motions. So everything that end is great, however he is still soooooo skinny. I am sure people who cuddle him think I am starving him. I have him on Fish4dogs puppy food which is simply 70% fish and potato with Vits and minerals. I am giving him more than the suggested amount plus he's having a fair amount of training treats as well, which is homemade sardine or fish cake. I have also stating giving him a probiotic called feelwells.Apart from being skinny he is still a little itchy but not as bad as when he was on the other foods.

Has anyone go any other suggestions?? I have increased his meals from 3 back to 4 meals as well. He is very very lively and on the go a lot so I guess he is burning up a lot of calories . I am sure if I just increase the amount still more I will end up with loose motions again.

Whenever mine have an upset stomach I put them on bio yoghurt for a week afterwards this seems to put things back to normal, but check with your vet first if he has suspected allergies.

Rosie,

Feelwells dog treats?  They contain chicken oil (adult variety) or poultry fat (puppy variety) - so if you suspect a chicken intolerance I would not use them.

Unless you can see Fozzie's ribs (or would if he had no coat) or your vet was concerned, he's probably at a good weight.   Many vet surgeries have free weight checks with a vet nurse, you might want to schedule one for a second opinion :-)

At 3 months puppies really should not be plump - they are in mega growth mode and too much weight is actually bad for while bones are growing.

second that, he should be all lanky and skinny looking at that age

Re the Feelwells..I hadn't realised they had poultry fat in..he actually seems to be fine on them, and it was when I started them his motions firmed up..so maybe not an intolerance after all???? Mind you that cold be why he's still a bit itchy !

I want to start him on raw food as soon as possible,as that's what I feed my others, but wanted to get his stools OK first. I am hoping once he's on raw the weight will come on.I have also been told that dogs are often intolerant to cooked chicken & chicken in processed dry food but not raw

He is very ribby at the mo ,but as has been said I wouldn't want him porky either..he'd definitely lanky.

Whilst I am writing can someone tell me how I quote someone's previous mail in a reply.
