Topic Other Boards / Foo / Kitchen rubbish bins aaaahhhh!!
- By Beastie2 [gb] Date 17.01.09 14:23 UTC
Can anybody recommend a kitchen rubbish bin that is going to work for more than a couple of months, I got a touch lid one from Dunelm Mill about £30, lid broke after a couple of months so got money back & went for a more expensive Brabantia one still touch lid type as I really liked them, that lasted exactly one month so took that back today & was told by the man on the customer service desk that they have had loads of them back as the touch lids stop working. I do not like pedal bins but decided after trawling round several shops that it would have to be a pedal bin, got the B****** thing home & guess what it doesn't work so that is going back too. All I want is one that works & looks reasonably nice, stainless steel preferably 30 litre capacity or thereabouts max 70cm high 30cm wide. We used to have a plastic one but the lid used to fall off & with my greedy lot around was not safe, I did look at a plastic one again today but again lid not very secure. Any suggestions?

I like my cupboard door one.  Safe from the dogs and opens automatically with the door.  It would not hold nearly as much but personally I would prefer not to have too much rubbish in the house for more than a day.

I have a Brabantia one and it has been brilliant...was yours just a hickup do you think?
It's a touch open jobbie and I find it excellent. The girlies ignore it....!!!!

Ikea do a great one, Its Great Dane proof, They do quite a range,I have three and have even taken to using one to store dry dog food in as they cant break in!!! Had for over a year now, no problems at all

I had hoped that the Brabantia one was just a one off & was going to get another as we really liked it, until the man in the shop said they had a lot back, maybe I will give it a try anyway, perhaps they had a dodgy batch in. Will also have a look at what Ikea have to offer. I don't have th space for one on the cupboard doors & am not really keen on that type.

I have a Brabantia one which I have had for around 4 years.  It is my second one, the first lasted about five years before the lid went.

You can get replacement lids from Brabantia - cheaper than a new bin.

I've had a cheapie largem stainless steel pedal bin for 7 years bought from B&Q, it's getting a bit of rust now but otherwise fine.  They still sell them and I will replace with the same, just hope it's the same quality.

Thanks everyone, I have been & got another Brabantia so fingers crossed, & it was £5 cheaper than the one we took back even though it was the same model so a bargain (hopefully).

Would you like a dog that can open your brabantia bin & empty it for you ;-)  Expect one day to find the pup actually in the bin wondering how he'd got there.  He loves banging the bin lid, which obliges by opening & there are sooooo many goodies to find in a kitchen bin.  My old girl just loves having the pup on the loose, she's had so many treats!

Sue, you need to ring Brabantia.  Try 0870 240 7641 or 0845 602 4877.

I bought a similar bin at Dunelm Mill, it broke within a month (flip top catch broken). I exchanged for the same model but that also broke in the same way.

#####  I HAVE A FIX! HOORAY!  ######
I found that the catch/clasp (plastic piece that holds the lid down) was a bit fragile and prone to breaking.
Once the catch is broken it's not possible to slap the lid down and have it stay in place. (Grrr!)
However, it is possible to drill a hole through the catch/clasp and feed a small nail through such that it will hold the catch/clasp at such an angle that you can slap the lid down and that it will hold nicely. Side benefit is that you get a warm feeling of self-satisfaction if the fix works!

For this fix this you will need: a drill; a nail (less than 25mm in length); drill bit very slightly narrower than the nail; rose bit for counter-sinking (maybe); a grown-up if you're new to DIY
The clasp is a piece of plastic with a spring attached, when the spring is more or less vertical the lid can be slapped down and the clasp will hold it in place.
(1) familiarise yourself with the claps and how it works, angles involed etc, the 'inside' clasp plate is the plastic plate next to the lid.
(2) drill a hole through one side of the 'inside' plate of the clasp (either side or the other of where the lug from the lid goes)
(3) continue the drilling through the 'outside' plate of the clasp such that the top of the hole is about 4mm from the lower edge of the outside plate
(4) push the nail through the inside plate and then the outside plate (hold the clasp vertical while you do this)
(5) if the nail doesn't lie flush enough so the lid can be slapped down then use countersink bit and re-fit nail

Basically the nail will prevent the spring from pushing the clasp from a 'good' position to 'too far' position.
If you find that the clasp is allowed to rotate too far or not enough then try again on the opposite side adjusting the holes position's appropriately.

STEVE IS NOT PREPARED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY INJURY OR LOSS OR DEATH THAT MAY RESULT FROM ANYONE ATTEMPTING THIS FIX.
I WILL TAKE ANY THANKS THOUGH (AND YOU ARE WELCOME)

I just gave up with bins and  have a sainsburys ( there are other supermarket bags that can be used!) carrier bag hanging on a hook from the top of the cupboard. So far even the very bouncy baby hasnt got at it(sssh I havnt told her if she stands on the kitchen sofa she may just about reach it!)

havent read the whole thread but we have a tap top bin which the dog opens obv so i brought a child proof catch for drawers/bins and i stuck one side on the metal bin and the other on the curved lid and it works like a dream. you have to squeeze it open first then tap the bin. basically a bin lock

I have two bins that fit in a cupboard and pull out. My cocker can open pedlal  bins too easily then Jake (BC)  pulls out the bags and Whistler eats the contents - gross!!

Gave up on bins a long times ago. Plastic bag hung high on untility room door and changed every day if not twice, anything meaty/smelly just goes straight into the outside bin. It's just not worth the risk, as it amazing how far they can reach.

There are bins with sensors in the lids on offer at groupon!! Very nice looking look like bra-thingy ones.

I have a bra-thingy bin, had it aaaaaaaages now no issues with lid, although I will be bookmarking Steve's post!! Thanks for that, but could you work on a way to get the dints out?? Mines a lovely cream to match my cream rangecooker but looking a bit shabby with the dints...over to you Steve!!
