who knows or had chilled or freash/ frozen semen impanted into there bitches over there in the uk with a good succes rate
- By JeanSW Date 17.01.09 23:02 UTC
If you look at both under a microscope, you can immediately see that chilled is a better bet than frozen.  Sorry, I haven't had it done to any of my bitches to answer your question, but have seen a huge difference in the activity levels of both chilled and frozen, due to my work.

I think the rule used to be that only frozen can be used in the UK, but it might have changed since then.

ETA: It seems that, if the stud dog has a pet passport, then chilled can be used.

From what I have read fresh chilled is almost as good as a natural mating but frozen less than half as successful.

Last time I checked you couldn't bring fresh chilled semen into the UK it had to be frozen and depending where it came from varying times it was kept before importation, and also what health checks (Rabies titres and jabs) the dog had to have before semen taken.

Due to the cost I would sooner travel with the bitch abroad, but certainly would consider trying fresh chilled if it were allowed

it all change chilled can come into the uk along with the right paper dog import lic from defra health cert from the vet the other side where the collection from, pet passport detail and kennel reg detils,as long as the dog is pet passport beacuse of the rabies law to the uk,to bring in the seman.

you could turn all the paper work around in a week with drfra but on their form and kc form allow 14 days turn around to get lic,

I have A.I. two of my girls with frozen semen in the UK, with no sucess at all :-(
- By Brainless [gb] Date 18.01.09 10:54 UTC
That is so good to know as it made no sense before being able to bring a dog in but not his fresh semen.

I have a friend who has used frozen semen on 2 of her bitches (same sire) She had success both times, though not huge litters for the breed. One of the bitches from the first litter has recently had a litter (natural) so no problems there :-)

Don't know about chilled though.

I haven't had personal experienc of using AI but my boy is from a frozen AI mating, he was one of 7. The previous litter (same parents, same frozen batch) had 6 puppies. Average litter size for the breed is probably about 6. I don't know if it was surgical or trans-cervical though, surgical is supposed to have better results for frozen but the KC need a good reason for surgical AI now.

Success in my breed has only been two litters over 30 years!!!!  There have been many expensive failures.

Now chilled would be a far better option.

We currently have a 97 % sucess rate with frozen semen and 99 % with chilled semen, prepared and inseminated by ourselves

There's been 3 successful frozen semen Large Munsterlander matings all bearing litters of 6 and one unsuccessful but this was probably more due to the incompetent vet freezing it in the wrong gas for transportation and the container tipping over.

Importing chilled semen is not an easy thing to arrange here in the UK because of the pet passport scheme. You can only import fresh semen if the stud dog is fully compliant with our pet passport scheme. That includes having had a blood test done more than six months ago to see if the Rabies vaccination took. That's just like our rules for pet passports, we do it because we have to if we want to travel abroad. But most other countries have no such laws so they don't need to have a blood test done after the rabies vaccination, and if they did, there would be no need to do it six months before you wanted to do anything. We looked into importing chilled semen recently and had no luck and I know other people in our breed too who have given up on it for the time being.

Frozen semen is vastly more expensive but can be easier to arrange because it could have been taken and frozen six months previously, or less if it is from an officially declared Rabies free country. Even so, it has to have been stored completely separate from any other semen.

So it's not easy here! Where abouts are you?

Wow, that's impressive!

Do you also import chilled and frozen semen Paris?
- By Paris [gb] Date 18.01.09 15:40 UTC
Hello

Yes we import/export chilled and frozen semen from many different sires.

The dogs we were looking at live in France. They have not had a blood test for rabies. Their owners are willing to have the test taken but that would set the process back by another six months, more if you count the timing of our bitch's season.

Do you perhaps deal with countries with similar pet passport schemes to us? I suppose that would mean the studs would be more likely to be compliant with our laws.

paris with a track that you state you have who do use in the uk for AI or freezing.
- By klb [gb] Date 18.01.09 18:03 UTC
I have imported semen from Australia - attemped AI twice and failed.

Paris .. I to would welcome info re your AI's as I have semen on store and am reluctant to consider using it until I can find a practitioner with high success rate. Perhaps you could PM me ??
