Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Length Of Tie
- By GG1 [gb] Date 17.01.09 12:44 UTC
Hi all, I have a quick question.
What is the normal length of a tie (As in Mating!!) It cropped up last night in a conversation I was having with a friend. She asked me if a tie was necessary, I explained no, but it will have a better chance of success if a tie occurs. She then asked the question of how long does a tie need to be. I honestly did not know the answer!!! I have no idea if it should be 2 mins or half an hour!!  The stupid thing is, I lost sleep last night actually thinking of this!!!!!! Can someone help me to ensure I have a nice peaceful sleep tonight!

As long as there is a tie you know that what is needed has been delivered, (that is the problem with slip matings you don't know if it got that far) so it is all good if it is a minute or more.

In my experience ties usually last from 15 minutes to half an hour, though short ones and ones of an hour are not unusual.

A tie can be anything between 5 minutes to over an hour. (The longest ones tend to be when you're out in the open air, in the rain!)

lol ;)  I must admit, when I had a litter with my girl she was tied for nearly 40 mins!!  She is going on a blind date Tomorrow so fingers crossed all will be well!! (Shortish tie and no rain!!!!)

Have been out this afternoon to get the all weather gear!!! My girl is Four and a half now and this will be her second and last litter so hopefully the deed will be done and the seeds sown so I can keep one of my girls baby's!! I did get a strange look in the shop when he asked me what I was planning to do, Breed I Said, and walked out blushing!! :)

One of my bitches only tied for one minute on one of the occasions she was mated (same for both matings to that particular dog), she had 9 pups. :) Otherwise I find average for mine is 15-20 mins.

My girls and their 'boyfriends' average out at about 15-20mins. Ones been covered earlier today and that one was 20mins. Thankfully mines a small breed and the stud owner gets her boys to do it on a table, so much kinder on knees and backs! ;-) :-D
After the deed he decided to have a rest and loll all over her, typical man!

Fingers crossed she takes...
