Is it illegal to take pups(working breed-not gundogs)to Ireland to be docked? I've been told a dobermann breeder has been prosecuted for doing this, but a friend has a boxer pup which was bred in England then taken to Ireland to be docked. No,I'm not looking to do it-just wondered.

It is illegal to take the pups to Ireland for docking.  But if they are working type dogs why the need to go to Ireland?  They can be done legally in this country.

Thanks, why are people still doing it then? There's litters advertised on E**** as being legally docked.
- By helenmd [gb] Date 11.01.09 11:11 UTC
I'm talking about dobermanns,rottweillers,boxers etc.
- By SharonM Date 11.01.09 11:12 UTC
Then as far as I know it's illegal.

I saw that too, and wondered.

Just a quick question, and its probably been answered before, but I havent seen it, are you still able to import docked dogs (ie the doberman) and are they able to be shown???  Just a wondering thing.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 11.01.09 13:51 UTC
Docked dogs can be imported, but can only be shown (at shows where the public pays an admission fee) if they were docked before April 2007.

thank you JG

Thats in England the rules are different for Sotland in that legally docked dogs can be shown and in Wales the cut of date is 28th March 2007. Just to add to the confusion.

I'm sure someone was prosecuted for doing this with a litter of Boxer pups last year?
- By alandkell [gb] Date 13.01.09 19:08 UTC
hi there we breed working cockers and we have our pups  legally docked and dew clawed all come with certificates of proof ,there are only about a half dozen vets that will still do this in our area (west yorks )and we still had animal welfare on our case they came to check all my litter and certificates too they are really strict over here.  if you send your dog out of the country to be docked any kc reg dog will become a non kc reg dog and a hefty fine to deal with its not worth the risk

while this must have been inconvenient for you its great to hear about them actually checking up on this!

You can take a litter of Dobes to Ireland to be docked!  Nothing Illegal about it!
- By Moonmaiden Date 14.01.09 23:37 UTC
They would of course have to be under a week old when you took them & I doubt any ferry company would allow puppies of such a young age to travel openly
- By FooFoo [gb] Date 14.01.09 23:43 UTC
Yes but most take their bitches over and whelp them over there.... and bring them back!  I am only making a point! - not saying it is OK..... I breed Dobes and am about to have 2nd litter with tails.... you dont see me swanning off to Ireland to make them more sellable but some people do!  Even those at it for decades do it or so I have heard!  I wonder if they can prove they have been there?
- By Moonmaiden Date 14.01.09 23:59 UTC
They would have to lie to the KC on the place of birth & what about the certificates they require to prove they were docked legally ?? None of the puppies could be shown in the UK of course as the ban covers all dogs docked after the"cut off date"
- By zwergpin [ie] Date 15.01.09 13:51 UTC
You can show a docked dog bred in Ireland (After April 07)at any UK Ch, Shows where the public Do Not pay an admission fee
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 15.01.09 16:53 UTC
There's hardly any shows though where the public don't pay.

Do you think? I always think there are lots, although maybe that's because I have a breed with lots of breed clubs, so maybe that's why I have a skewed perception. I imagine Dobermanns do too though.

I think you have to pay for all general champ shows.
- By klb [gb] Date 15.01.09 21:20 UTC
I show my docked GSP who is just 15mth and born after the AWB and docked under the working dog excemption - last year I had to miss just 8 shows due to public entrance fee and could enter 21.

You cannot enter Crufts as the public pay to get in, also you legally cannot enter any companion/open shows that are part of another event that the public are charged to enter(country fairs etc)
