a change of lady at my groomers means my schnauzer was hand stripped for the first time yesterday. Now she has no outer/guard hairs should i put a coat on in cold weather? i forgot to ask the groomer! also. does anyone know how long the coat takes to grow back?

are you sue it was handstripped? not meaning to sound patronising, but.....if your dog has always been clipped then i doubt its coat was even strippable by hand. If it is a hand strip then approx 4-6 months.

i personally wouldnt bother with a coat. the top coat generally doesnt keep the dog warm anyway, it was designed to protect the dog when diving into thorny bushes etc, the undercoat which is left in when hand stripping is the coat that keeps the dog warm.

yes im sure, she has been coat kinged up till now and the top coat was ready to fall out- only took her 2 hours including bathing her! she does look a bit naked though which is why i was worried

Well I'm a cruel mum and I've clipped one of my boys right down at the coldest time of the year.  To be truthful he doesn't even seem to have noticed and he had a long corded coat before, even today which is really cold he's been out for about2 hours and wasn't bothered one bit.

If she seems to be feeling the cold then let her wear a coat for a while - especially if it's freeeezing! :-)  If she is going out in wet weather I would use a coat to keep her dry as her top coat is gone, just until her new coat starts growing in ;)    Personally, I'd have left some coat on to keep her warmer and dry in wet weather, but what's done is done  ;)

i hand strip my borders in winter, as long as the dog doesnt live outdoors then its fine

I have my cocker hand stripped which we did before Christmas we went off on holiday on a canal boat from 27th Dec 3rd Jan and it was -7. The Border was fine but my cocker was cold so he had on a Tshirt coat the workmen bought him for Christmas, wind whistled through that! then his life vest cause it was warmer and he was fine with that on albeit bright orange. But yes I would say a coat just to keep the wind off.
