Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / How much to feed 9 month old westie

My 9 month old boy westie currently weighs 5.85kg. When we collected him from the breeder at 2 months, he advised us to keep him on his puppy food for two years and to leave food down all the time so he can eat when he wants.

After noticing some dominance problems, we took him to the vet last week where we were told his weight is fine for his age but we need to start feeding him twice a day after we've eaten rather than leaving his bowl down. He is on Country Pursuit puppy food (he is sick if we give him anything else) and they recommend 310g of food a day for a dog his weight.

I weigh out 155g of food for the morning and the same for the evening. I am little worried as he won't touch what I give him in the morning. He loves his food in the evening but only eats half of it which is about 75g.

I've check with the vet again about how much to give him and they have said it varies from food to food depending what he is on. I think 310g a day is alot for a small westie and considering IAMS puppy food say 95g per day for a puppy his size.

Any suggestions or ideas would be welcome.

P.S. He is generally OK and energetic, lively etc!!

Some dogs suit a twice a day diet some don't. I find fussy eaters do better on once a day.  I personally would never leave food down all day.

At 9 months old and a small breed he will be fine on the once a day in the evening.

You could give him a handful in the morning as a small breakfast and then a bigger meal at night.

We have a two year old Westie girl who is the same weight as yours is. She has always been allowed to help herself when ever she likes and it seems to suit us. She has never had issues with greed as she was only one of three. She only eats what she needs at any one time. We feed her on James Wellbeloved Duck and Rice and James Wellbeloved Lamb and Vegetable the adult one and for a dog her size it is advised to swap from puppy to adult at six months of age.
