Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / teenage male cocker weeing indoors

Our wonderful 20 month old cocker has started peeing indoors - he does not seem to realise he is doing it. We bred him and trained him. Is this a hormone behaviour problem? We have him, his mum (unspayed) and a neutered retriever. Is it a pack behaviour? Have just had visitors for 10 days - could he just be over excited? We have tried to think of all excuses but my carpet, rugs, settee etc are being ruined. Have always had bitches before.

Is he cocking his leg, peeing like a puppy or leaking? Ja:)kie

Thanks for answering, he has just started to cock his leg outside but indoors he is squatting like a puppy - profuse amount with very strong yellow colour. Sorry for the graphic description but seems concentrated.

Is your boy neutered Lesley? If he isn't, then perhaps his Mum is coming into season & his hormones are on the march -this can make young dogs forget their housetraining & they won't always cock their leg either :-) If however he is neutered & you think he's unaware he's urinating, then a visit to the vet to check for infection or some other problem would be a good idea. Is he licking his "bits" more than usual & have you noticed any kind of discharge? These would be signs he maybe has an infection.

A tip from someone who's been there - the best detergent to use to clean the carpets/rugs is Asda biological detergent - it seems to neutralise the smell so that the culprit doesn't think s/he has licence to "go" in the same spot for evermore!

I have been using 'odour eliminator' from the vets which has worked with both puppies and v old cat! He is not going in same place though, just squats wherever he is.

No he isn't neutered and Yes, I think mum may be coming into season. Until breeding her she was every 9 months, then 6 months, then 9 again. So on counting since her last season (end May) she may be due again (8 months at end Nov). Damn, fireworks going off again. with 3 dogs and 2 cats a real nuisance.

Think the first thing would be a trip to the vets, it is more than likley he has an infection. If he was sent marking I would expect he would cock his leg, as he is squating I think he may be being taken short and may be in pain. Don't use anything with amonioa (spelling) in it to clean up as this will encourage him to go on that place again. May be try to keep him in a room where the least damage will be done. First things first, a trip to the Vet, who should be able to help even if it is a hormonal problem, but I don't think it is, I would suspect an infection. Hope I'm right and it is soon sorted. Ja:)kie

The strong yellow colour worries me a little. This may well be nothing but then again. . . Kidney problems can give a strong yellow colour. I might pay you to take a sample with you when you go to the vets.

Dont worry too much, it's long odds that there really is a problem.
