Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Using antibiotics when bitch is pregnant
- By Traceyc [gb] Date 07.01.09 14:39 UTC
Hi,  My 20 month old shih tzu is 5 weeks into her pregnancy and has needed to go to the vet today as she has sickness and diahorrea.  Its not bad at all (just sick once and diahorrea once also) but she is really off colour in herself.  The vet said she had a slight temperature and gave her an antibiotic injection.  The vet said that the antibiotic was safe to use in pregnant bitches.  I'm not sure what antibiotic she used but will ask tomorrow when I take my dog back for another injection and some tablets. Was just wondering whether anyone has any experience with antibiotics and pregnant dogs?

Penicillin is fine during pregnancy, I expect that is what the vet used. I have also used Synulox (amoxycillin with clavulanic acid) without any ill effects.

One of my girls bled from start of season until she whelped and spent 7 of the 9 weeks on synulox, she had a lovely healthy litter of 7 pups.
