My Penny has developed masitis. Her pups are 3 days old. She has been given antibiotics and an anti inflammatory. She doesn't really want the pups suckling. Any advice please.
At this stage the milk will be starting to come in properly so the pups need to suckle to stop her getting too uncomfortable. Is it her first litter? Are their nails sharp? If she was mine I'd sit with her and hold her to make sure that the pups can suckle to relieve the pressure. Hot (not scalding!) flannels and massage can also help.
This is not her first litter. Pups nails are OK. The 2 back milk sacs are rock hard. I will go and try the hot cloths, thanks for this. Will let you know later how I am getting on.
Have you tried bolied cabbage leaves boli them , let them cool a bit and apply to the affected area , never would have belived it until some one (human ) told me she had tried it , we did and it worked a treat
