I have the Miele Cat&Dog and it is absolutely brilliant.   On the high power setting it literally can suck my wall-to-wall carpeting up off the floor.  It picks up dog hair with ease and even muddy pawprints disappear from my light beige carpeting. 

The Miele replaced a Dyson which I got tired of repairing - and the Miele is much more powerful than the Dyson was on a good day.

Miele now make uprights as well as canisters, if you have a preference.

Henry - dirt cheap, barely anything to go wrong, they just keep on and on working. Ours has outlived our Mieles many times over, despite extensive building work and all the plaster dust that goes with it.

They aren't used in most commercial situations for nothing. When did you last see an office cleaner use anything else ... ?!

We've had Henry for years and they are pretty indestructable.  My OH once picked up a couple of non working ones from the dump (whilst we were on holiday!) and although I moaned at the time I must admit they kept us in spare parts for years!!

I also like to use an upright and have recently bought a Vax Swift Pet Premium 1600 which we are very pleased with and only cost £60 ish in the Argos sale!!  The leads on these modern uprights are never long enough though, Henry is better for moving further from a plug!!

Be cautious with Dyson, we've never found them particularly reliable and spare parts are expensive

I have friends swear by the Henry too - not for me as I prefer uprights though :)  I'd steer well clear of any model of dyson, even at crazy sale prices - IME they're not what they used to be on reliability or performance and they're too bulky, heavy etc and made of shatter friendly plastic LOL.

I've had various models of electrolux over the years and always gone back to that brand.  Bought the red one for animals (with a power paw logo and brush on front) a few months ago and it's ace.  2000w motor and very powerful.  Edge to edge cleaning - the best ever, really does get between the fitted carpet and skirting boards but doesn't wreck the wood/paint finish in the process :)

On the down side the dust bucket is very small and easily fills with long doggy hairs and the cord could do with being about 6 feet longer but IMO the excellent suction, lightweight body, easy manoeuvrability and low profile (great for under furniture without always using the on board tools) outweigh these minor niggles

Miele upright is going to cost a fortune - well over 200. 

I have a Bissell liftoff that I got nearly 3 years ago to replace my Dyson.  The brush motor went just before Christmas and it is out of guarantee.  It is going to cost £60 to repare.  I bought it under the impression (from the Ideal Homes show) that the filters just needed washing.  Not true - the post motor filter needs replacing fairly regularly (gets to smell doggy) and costs anything from £12 to £15 - not readily available.  Coupled with the fact that the container needs emptying everytime you use it  - I would not recommend.

On the other hand my old Dyson which has had a real battering is still going (d-i-l has it now)  The suction on the hose is not good.  I have just gone and got the Dyson allergy that was on special offer in Tesco's for £170.  The filters are all washable though the hose suction is still poor.  Was cross that I would have to fork out for another because we are putting a central vacuum system in our new build.

Im a Dyson fan I have a pull along not an upright and its my second in about ten years ( the old one is down the office) love them. Ive a Dyson washing machine as well, no problems.

Definitely a Henry (the do a pink one now called Hattie, does anyone know if it's any good?)  Have had Henry's for about 15 years now.  I have a house one & a kennel one.  The kennel one is the original house one that got a bit smelly whilst we were renovating.  I don't use the bags just fill him up & tip him out.

All i can say from our experience of vacs, dyson seem to be the worst! lol! They seem to be the most costly, and we bought a special animal one to deal with the dog hairs and it got clogged up and broke!! Sent it back, replacement, same thing!! Not sure which vac we have now, but its a cheaper one and its a brillient little thing! (well tall thing!)

Hi Thanks for all the replies.....gives me a choice of what to look for (though to be honest would never have gone for a Henry mainly because of the price very cheap ....and wasn't sure because of that if they were any good so I owe old Henry an apology lol  )

Yes I have a pink Hettie.
She is very good, I goot her just for upstairs as I cant be bothered carrying my upright up and down all the time.
It was because at the hospital here they use the Henrys and they are really reliable, colour (and name) is the only difference.

Hi Annie checked with OH and apparently ours was even cheaper than I thought at £120  and is now reduced further with free delivery from HERE if you're interested (which seems a real bargain, so will probably get another myself :-p )

i have had a couple of Dysons and they didn't last 2 minutes. I now have a Sebo and it is fab, never loses its suction power, I have been known to hoover up huge things by accident!!!

Another Henry fan here too.  Has already outlived the last Dyson and all previous other vacuums.

Me too, I'm a Henry fan he's much better than the upright Dyson I had (very heavy,cumbersom and large).  He even has a special attachment for hard floors and a low suck setting (not sure what for), dogs hate him but I love him. :D

Oya we bought a Bissel1 12 amp- Lift Off revolution- press and grab- the whole canister lifts out and you can carry that around to clean stairs or what not-

We just bought this cause ours broke and I just love it :-) We only paid about 2hundred

Hope it lasts longer than mine Dollface - I am still waiting for someone to phone me to arrange to pick it up to be repaired.  I know we have had Christmas in between - but how long can one last without a cleaner (yes I can lift it off and clean with the cylinder part but have only got a tiny stair tool to do it)  Had to buy another! 

oooh don't say that :-( My sis has the same one and she has had it for awhile so who knows- my last Bissell diferent kind lasted almost 5 years till son fried it... I mostly have hard wood in my house so am hoping it lasts awhile.
