Hello ive just wormed the puppies for the second time on tuesday (and wed and thurs) when they turned 5 weeks but have noticed thier breath smells terrible. I noticed this smell last time but didnt connect the two things. Its not just thier breath that smells its thier wee also. Its a very strong smell almost like something is burning and when they have had a wee you can tell as soon as you come in the room its so strong. They had the last dose of the three days on thurs but it is still a realy strong smell. I was enjoying giving them all kisses and letting them greet me face to face and now i cant because thier breath smells so bad. I used panacur suspension. Anyone else ever noticed this strange smell? Also so far when they have been wormed at 2 wks and 5 wks i havent seen any sign of worms in thier droppings, mum wasnt wormed during pregnancy so i was expecting to see worms with the puppies but thier hasnt been a single one as far as i have seen and i have been actively looking. Do you think this means they dont have worms or that the wormer isnt working?
Thanks in advance Truffles mummy :)

Panacur wormer should dissolve the worms and larval stages so you shouldn't expect to see actual dead worms (I have never seen any in pups or adults in 17 years) unless the worm burden was severe as in a rescue litter my Friend had.  These pups were pot bellied starey coated and anaemic, and when wormed sicked and pooed them up and in fact had to have the worming stopped after two days they were so ill.

maybe worth giving the vet a call for advice never had the problem myself maybe if possible try a get a little urine sample you could try making one pee with cotton wool and squeezing it into a little bottle to be tested. Are you sure you are giving the correct dosage?

Never experienced the smelly breath or wee with Panacur   I was also thinking about dosage?

Only time I've ever seen worms after worming with it was when my daughter's two rescue kittens were wormed with it.  They too had a very bad worm burden ;) Took repeated courses to get rid completely.

Thats good to know the wormer is probably working. As for the doses they are about 1 and a 1/2 kg now and the dose is 1 ml per kg so they were having just over one ml each. Some of them were closer to 2 kg but i didnt want to give them too much incase it did them any harm so they all had the lower dose. Also it is the panacur 2.5% that our vet told us to use because they were small but i know everyone recommends the 10% so perhaps it has something to do with this strength? The smell is starting to fade a little now as it did last time and the pups all seem very well in themselves, poor mum is still trying to help them wee and feeding them very frequently, she looks like she is worn out poor girl :( We are vetting a home for our last puppy tonight and it sounds promising so hopefully they will all have homes now :) also i am keeping a little girl.

the dose for 10% panacur is 0.5ml per kg (its been a while since i worked in private practice so think thats right) so the amount needed if using the 2.5% is higher, will be 2ml per kg so you may be underdosing them. the dose rate is 50mg/kg for 3 consecutive days. double check with your vet.

Hello you are absolutly right, the dose is 2ml per kg, they were about 1 and a half kg and got just over a ml each so they really didnt have enough :( the dose for a pregnant or nursing bitch is 1ml per kg so i think thats maybe where things got muddled up. The are 6 weeks old today would you suggest waiting till they are 8 weeks for the final dose and giving them the proper amount or re worming them sooner as the last 2 times have been at half the amount they should have had?

i would give your vet a call to double check, its been years since i worked in private practice, and i cant remember what they generally advise. im assuming it would be fine to do them again in a week. good luck!
