Aunty Beeb is stuck between a rock and a hard place. After bring some of "those" practices to the attention of the public they could hardly then show crufts as is. Although guilty of sensationalising, the BBC was not responsible for the outrageous breed standard rules and practices.

I for one respect the BBC for trying to force the KC into action. Whilst I have a tad of sympathy for the KC i do get riled at the constant counter arguement that the KC is a not for profit organisation. I know several people that work for non profit organisations who get paid extremely well, often better than those in the commercial sector (especially when you take into account the non wage benefits such as job security).

Not giving money to share holders does not make a company worthy of being cannonised. The KC is best placed to resolve the issues raised but ultimately has decided (for whatever reason- good or bad) to not do so.

Myabe take a peek at this thread in which the producer of the programme admits to misrepresenting the amount the KC is doing in order to increase the impact of the programme.

Could you elaborate.

I have read many breed standards and none fit that description???

What has it resolved not to do?

Seems to me they've been galvanised into action as never before

breeders are only going to breed dogs that the kc breed standard has set so the kc should be at fault and resolve the problems

Er no, judges assess dogs against their interpretation of the breed standard, some breeders what to win so breed the type that the judges will put up & give the top awards to.

Now in GSDs you have people who breed dogs that are not the correct proportions according to the breed standard, however some judges like long bodied short legged dogs so put up these types of GSDs

The BC has an approximate "perfect" height-21" for males & the bitches slightly less, yet my 21" tall BC looks huge against the dogs in the showring & my ISDS dog towers above them too yet he is 20 1/2" !!!!!!! Again what judges like, some breeders will breed for.

Basically it is all down to interpretation

One reason the KC has the"Fit for Purpose"program.

I've just been to a Labrador Retriever breeder's home today. All her dogs are health tested & she's been in the breed for over 40 years. Her dogs aren't just show dogs, dogs of her breeding have donr the job they were developed for, others are service dogs, others are simply healthy companion dogs. They look like Labradors, they can work like Labradors & they act like Labradors . Unlike another breeder whose dogs have heads like Rottweilers & were unable to "pick up"because their muzzles were way too short"however some judges liked them & yes theat breeder made up show champions.

The breed standard is not at fault in the above circumstances, the judges & breeders are/were

Quite:

I have not read a single standard that encourages unhealthy dogs.
