My daughter's lab had pups earlier today. There is 1 small one which was born with one eye open. I have never seen this in my breed. Has anyone had experience of this or can you offer any advice. Thank you.

Hiya, I have had this with a puppy, it got an infection in it ( puss discharge) I took it to the vet and got some antibiotic cream, all was ok after a day or so. good luck

I had a pup from a small litter that was born with both eyes open in a diamond shape, this poor wee fella was given sleep at 4 days old as he wasn't doing to well and kept fitting after feeding, he had liver shunt. Now I am not saying that your pup has anything like this and fingers crossed it is just an infection. Hope all goes well with the pups x

I have had two litters of Persian kittens born with their eyes open. This was many years ago. Sadly they were all blind. With the first litter, one of them had to be put to sleep as it couldn't cope, but the other two managed fine and I found them homes, but I had the second litter put to sleep.  With the first litter I was hoping that they would be ok as I hadn't come across it before, but sadly it wasn't.  I don't know what caused it, but it was around the time of the Chernobyl incident and I lived on the coast of East Yorkshire where a lot of lambs were born like this too. Or it could have been due to a mating that wasn't well matched as the queens were related (mother & daughter) and I used the same stud for both. I had them neutered after this.
What I would say is get some artificial tears from the chemist and keep putting them in as often as possible and most definitely keep it in the dark. At least it has only one open so maybe if it is blind it will only be in one eye. Perhaps you could cover the eye with something to keep it dark.

Sadly to say, the pup passed away this morning about 4pm. He was the smallest and weakest of the litter. Maybe its better this way than being blind.

I'm sorry quackquack, always sad to lose a puppy, by the sounds of what the others said though an open eye is a sign of something quite wrong with a puppy or kitten, my condolonsces to you.

Sorry about your pup, but it was probably for the best, poor little thing. Enjoy your others.
