Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / She likes to fart.. a lot!
- By felix [gb] Date 22.12.08 15:30 UTC
Hello all,

My pups a farter. Fact! And it's horrid!

She's a nearly 5 month old Shar Pei.

The farting wasn't a problem for the first few weeks I had her, and this is what I fed her:

First week: Eukanuba, 1kg bag, as given to me by the breeder.
Then: Changed her onto Wellbeloved, lamb and rice. Farting didn't seem to be a problem.
Now:  Wellbeloved fish and rice - farts to high heaven.

Do you think the fish and rice, specifically, makes her fart. As I type this I can honestly say I'm struggling to breathe because her farts are that bad and she's constantly doing them. We've just been on a walk/run through the park and she did her business - I thought that might settle her gases for a bit but it didn't.

What might be causing her to fart?

She doesn't eat that fast; she eats 3/4 smaller meals a day, as opposed to 2 large ones.

Today, in fact, has been particularly bad - she's hardly touched her food, but is farter every minute odd and it smells terrible.

Please, please help.

Merry xmas to all! :)

Felix

My dogs were windy on James Wellbeloved.  I then changed to an alternative hypoallergenic food.

I think I might do this too. I might try Arden..

Any suggestions? Maybe buy a smaller bag first to try it?

How long can you go on trying different foods before a dog gets.. well, "pissed off"? lol
- By Granitecitygirl [eu] Date 22.12.08 15:54 UTC
I've heard of some dogs being windy on Arden too.  I guess the main foods are really Arden and Burns.  I feed Skinners which I buy online but each to their own lol!  The good thing about Burns and JWB is that you can buy them in the pet superstores,  other foods you really need to order online.

My dog is windy on JWB lamb & rice, but hers comes out the other end - a big burp let's me know she's finished her dinner!  She was on Royal Canin before without burps.

thats what mine does! :-) she comes over to you to say thanks for her dinner then does it! :-D

Why don't you go back to the food the breeder recommended - eukanuba?
- By felix [gb] Date 22.12.08 20:58 UTC
The breeder never recommended Eukanuba - I was given a Eukanuba puppy pack, as far as I'm aware the pups were being fed on a mixture of it and Royal Canin. When I spoke to her to ask advice on changing foods (be it that Wellbeloved is a million times better than Eukanuba and I like to feed my dog the best possible, so was never gona leave her on Eukanuba when there are better alternatives) she suggested Wellbeloved as it's what she has some of her adult dogs on.

My Samoyed burps a lot...very loudly and usually at the most inappropriate of times  I had a friend round the other day and I swear she thought I was pulling her leg with the old "It was the dog" adage...

She is fed on AG - I have to say though my dogs never seem to trump, which is good as I would much prefer them to burp!!

You do seem to have a lovely turn of phrase don't you! Can you not think of any other words to use?

Might be worth trying Burns, I've recently tried it and my lot love it as much as the Royal Canin...

I think the fact that Wellbeloved is proving to produce too much excess gas, suggests it's not such a better alternative to the Eukanuba afterall!

Why not switch her back (gradually, as swapping food too quick can cause digestive upset) to Eukanuba. It doesn't matter how good other people say a food is, if it doesn't agree with your dog it's not worth it.

My dog's a Shar Pei, one with acutely sensitive skin at that, I like JW for it's being hypo-allergenic whereas Euka is not. So on that basis alone I'd not feed her Euka. Also, I like the fact it's one of the best alternatives to feeding her "real/human" food, because all the ingredients are clearly stated - this might be true of Euka also, I don't quite remember, but a diet composed primarily of "chicken" and "chicken derivatives" can't compare to one where you know and choose what meat is used.

Also, I'm assuming by your comments that farting is a sign of digestive "upset" and that it is a "bad thing"? Please clarify..

Noticeable flatulence is certainly a sign of digestive disorder. The gas is produced by bacteria in the gut, and an imbalance causes excessive wind. What you feed is encouraging the wrong bacterial balance for your dog's individual constitution, and so a change is indicated.

You could try adding some charcoal granules to her food. this will help to absorb any excess gas/acid. It seems to help with one of mine. Available at pet shops

One of mine is on JWB turkey and rice and she does not have a problem with wind either end.

count yourself lucky.
i have three newfs and they can fart for England and it doest matter what food they are on.
Although i do belive it better not then in as they can suffer from blout etc.

It's good that they are expelling the gas rather than it building up, but much better for the dog that masses of gas aren't produced in the first place.
I have a breed known for it's flatulence, when young he proved he could clear a room often, with his offensive wind. Several different foods all produced the same effect, but when I introduced tripe & fed him on tripe & complete (50:50) the wind disapeared. He must still produces gas, but it's only noticable very occasionally :)

We have GWPs, Mum and daughter. Mum has never had a problem but pup has dreadful wind, very smelly! She has been fed on Eukanuba up to 6 months and we are changing over to Challenge now gradually mixing it in. I *think* there is an improvement but we won't know till she's completely on the Challenge. The person who developed the food and is an established breeder told me that some dogs just are that way.
Oh and out of interest, most of the rest of the litter have had similar problems and all were fed on Eukanuba for a period.
- By Granitecitygirl [eu] Date 30.12.08 10:58 UTC
Well since I changed my two over from JWB, OH can't blame it on the dog anymore! HAH! So I guess some people are just that way inclined too ;-)

Hi everyone, I think if a match were lit with my Zimba (labrador retriever) farting would make for a dangerous situation - perhaps if would could collect all the farts together we could harness a new energy supply !!!
Seriously though Zimba is on the low calorie joint maintenance food for his hip dysplasia & joints at four and half his muscles are very strong giving him his present mobility - he takes great pleasure in re-cycing other dogs faeces which is quite common but so far as farting goes on .... it just carries on !!!! no answers as my mum always says "better out than in".
Happy New Year

Im sorry I am creased up with this post topic, I cant see cause Im crying with laughter.
Oh dear, oh dear One of mine is on Beta had it since being weaned. The other on Natures Best from Eukanuba and again no wind.... But the odd brussel sprout did cause a smell at Christmas from the cocker.

My old pug was terrible, it was absolutely awful,  at that time we were thinking of changing to a raw diet and that certainly worked so we stuck to it ever since. When got my 1st bichon she was swapped to a raw diet too and now none of them seem to have a wind problem. They are positively fragrant :)
Well except the pug who just smells doggy, but that's an age thing.
Why not investigate raw feeding, it's very good for itchy dogs too.

Had a Rott who couldn't have food with sugar-beet pulp in it , didn't realise straight off what was causing her problem and ended up sat in car at exemption show absolutly P**** down with really heavy sideways rain, with the car front windows open and umbrellas out of both sides to keep rain out..........daren't wind windows up as they would have found 3 dogs and 2 suffocated bodies inside :-)

what an image!! sitting here laughing away at that tatty-ead :)

My Balto isn't particularly windy but when I changed from carpet to polished wood floors he got quite upset.  It must have been the way he was sitting as suddenly there was a loud bang like a shotgun going off, poor boy fled from the room in panic not realising that he had caused it lol :)

As for my girl cat, it's not often that she would be so un-ladylike but when she does they are quite awful.  If she has been sitting on my knee she will get up and look at me with total disgust (like it was my fault  ), jump off and flick her tail at me.

My animals make me laugh so much, life would be so boring without them.
- By Liz_R [gb] Date 06.01.09 19:27 UTC
These posts are cracking me up, they are soo funny. Especially the one about the polished wood floor. I can just imagine it lol
