Topic Dog Boards / Health / Is it worth neutering him?

Hello!
I need some advice. I have a 6 yr old entire male GR whose bits have never been a problem! But now I have this new GR girl, I'm wondering about having him done... I don't want to have her spayed as I'm keeping my options for possible breeding later. Would it be really worth me having Sam castrated if I don't have Tessa spayed too? -bearing in my mind I'm very very reluctant to have him go under surgery only for convenience reasons...
Do neutered males still show interest in girls? What would the behavioural benefits be if any? Never had more than single dogs before and never had them done either so sorry if the question sounds silly!

Many neutered males still show interest in girls and will tie.  At 6, it is a bit later in life to have him "done".  My mum's dog was done at 6 and aged literally overnight, it was horrible to watch.

Thank you.
That's what I thought. So I think I'll leave him alone. He'll just have to go on holiday to my brother's a couple of times a year, big deal!

He'll look forward to it :-)  "Yay a holiday from her!" lol. Season's can usually be calculated on a calender and planned for in advance, at least that is my experience.  I suppose every dog is different, and it depends on the vet too.  Someone more experience will be along anyway - my personal view is if you are going to neuter do it before they are 2years old.

I don't think it always has an adverse effect. I neutered my then, six year old Golden, when I had my first Flatcoat bitch pup, he was fine, but his coat was always a bit heavier afterwards. I lost him at 15.

As you say, if his bits haven't caused a problem before, it does seem a shame to do it, if you can manage in another way.
I am not a huge fan of neutering or spaying, but it does depend on circumstances.

I heard some dogs when nuetered can have problems like aggression ect- if he's been fine this long then I too would just find another option when she comes into heat- I believe you can give them a shot to see if there will be a difference in him or not and if its worth it.

I really think I'll leave it. I've never wanted to have him done and now that he's 'older' I'm even more reluctant. Especially if it won't stop him wanting to mate with my bitch.

As long as you can be absolutely sure he won't be able to mate your bitch.  At least a neutered male can't (after a time) get the bitch in whelp.

Unfortunately bitches do not come into season like clockwork and can almost be guaranteed to come in when the person who would have had her or your dog is going to be away etc.
