Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / which headcollar?
- By pinkbrady [gb] Date 29.12.08 20:40 UTC
We have been doing lead training with our huskys and although they are much better on the lead there are still improvements to be made. When we only had our girl we used a gentle leader headcollar on her which did help until she realised with a bit of subtle manipulation she could pull the loop back over her nose. Once she'd done this once she made it her mission to do it on every walk! We have tried other strategies and techniques but do like the control the headcollar gives.
Can anyone recommend a headcollar that even a manipulative husky would find difficult to remove (well the nose loop anyway)?
Thank you x

my rottie was a fantastic escape artist of all headcollar except the one we now have and will be getting more for the collies
they are the dogmatic ones, i bought a one off ebay and thought give it a try and i love it he has not got the nose cone we call it
off inthe  6 months of trying, he is very over the top in agility when queueing and every time with everyother head collar used
to get the nose cone off within seconds but not the dogmatic one stops on even when he writhing on the floor like and
idiot trying to remove it .

Thanks! I've just been looking at the dogmatic ones, they look great and a really good range available. I also like that they are padded as the gentle leader left a mark across our girls nose after each use.
Glad to hear even writhing on the floor doesn't remove it! If our girl couldn't paw it off she ended up running with her back legs whilst rubbing her head on the grass! LOL!

yes that is a favourite trick of the rottie and also putting his claws into the nose cone and pulling for all he is worth to try and remove it,
he actually sat up with his front legs and the toes of his front legs looped into the nose cone and pulled for all his worth only to end up
flat on his back with me laughing uncontrollably at him, it also does not ride up into his eyes and i can if i need be clip it onto his collar for extra security if
need be

Another vote for The Dogmatic here!
I used it when 'Bombproofing' my rescue sibe (not very well socialised) when he first came to us, and as we live in a rural area I still get it out now and again and take him into to town to keep up his manners in hustle and bustle busy pedestrain/road areas.

I have the Leather one (soaked in good saddlery oil overnight and they're nice and supple)
But the Summer before last I helped a couple with their new sibe and we took walks together and they had the Nylon padded dogmatic, and I have to say I think I prefered that (Just find the jazzy designs a bit garish)

Having trained with a headcollar I was then able to move on with training and have the lad walk nicely in collar or hanress (when required), Im sure you know this but as many novice owners find their way to threads on this forum through search engines, I have to say in caution to anyone considering Headcollars and Huskies, I would not use a headcollar for general walks for excercise for a Sibe due to the risk of neck injury from a whiplash jerk when they go from 0-60mph in the blink of an eye ;)

Good bit of kit as a training aide :)
- By pinkbrady [gb] Date 29.12.08 22:07 UTC
Thanks HuskyGal.
Yeh I only want to use it as a training aid to fine tune the training we've already started and when walking in busy areas to have that extra bit of control. We have used harnesses but we are finding them harder to walk on a harness at the moment in busy areas as we've been running them with a scooter and they now associate wearing the harness with running (as if husky's need wearing a harness as an excuse!)

I will definately give the dogmatic a try. Does anybody know of any shops that sell them or are they only available online?
- By HuskyGal Date 29.12.08 22:15 UTC
Only online Sweetpea :)

Dont know if this is anyuse, but got a 'top tip' from Jeangenie post long time ago which was that she'd fed dogs with headcollar on and that worked well for getting them used to and acceppting. Have to say, one day after Storm had performed a feet thrust forward skid to a halt forward roll  sit down protest in the middle of town..just when I thought he'd accepted it, I  had to go back to the drawing board adopted this method and it worked a treat.

another vote for the dogmatic here. have used the gentle leader in past, but it isnt enough to stop my boy when he really puts his weight into it (usually when saying hello to other dogs) dogmatic great, doesnt ride into eyes, now only use it for shows (he gets VERY excited and when im going to areas which i know to be dog dense :)  )like Huskygal i like the padded nylon collar, it is unfortunate about the "design" that adorns it, put it on my big strapping ridgie boy for the first time only for my OH to ask why there were daisies all over it :O   they are actually small cute dogs, but since then im a bit paranoid about it lol.

I use the dogmatic as well.  I have tried most and its the only one that has stayed on and worked well.

Dogmatic for me every time,
I have a very strong GSD bitch and use the dogmatic headcollar ,she also wears a half check leather collar and I use the dogmatic non slip lead which has a trigger on both ends as we set of the lead is fastened to both the headcollar and the half check at least until we are away from the surrounding houses where the cats lurk under cars  and then the lead is released from the dogmatic if I,m only doing a road walk I leave the headcollar on in case I need it and for extra control when we are on the way back home along the main road or returning through cat country.
She,s a very determined madam and so far has been unable to escape the dogmatic (touches wood)

Another vote for the Dogmatic here :)  It has the advantage that you can leave it on the dogs when you take their leads off and they still don't get them off :)
- By Brainless [gb] Date 30.12.08 12:20 UTC
I use the really simple ones made by Dajan (size 2 were only £3.80 each).
- By Hugos There [gb] Date 30.12.08 14:38 UTC
The pattern on the nylon version would I'm afraid stop me buying it.  :)
I really only like plain leather collars and leads, but looking at the website the leather ones come with brass fittings which I also dislike. They do Embossed Synthetic Leather ones which look quite nice.
Has anyone one of tried these?
- By belgian bonkers Date 30.12.08 15:36 UTC
I tried the synthetic leather.  Unfortunately it hasn't the proper buckle like the real leather one and I found it didn't stay put.  I'm sticking with the proper leather.  Well worth paying the extra.
- By suz1985 [gb] Date 30.12.08 15:49 UTC
the upside to the pattern is that is stops it looking like a muzzle, (in my opinion) to the general public, a lot of people have commented on his nice headcollar, as opposed to the gentle leader when several people asked if it was a muzzle, i have only once been asked that in the several months ive been using the dogmatic. i like the leather ones, but thought the fabric versions looked comfier for his nose.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 30.12.08 16:08 UTC
I agree that the coloured, patterned headcollars (Harry has a blue one and Piglet a red one) don't make the public think the dog's muzzled and therefore dangerous. However the ones I have are fiddly to take on and off because they've got nice secure buckles - and I don't like to leave a headcollar on when they're running loose through the woods and hedgerows.
- By suz1985 [gb] Date 30.12.08 16:17 UTC
the buckle is fiddly and i agree i wouldnt leave it on a woodland area. however i usually only use it at shows and at busy pedestrian/dog areas, such as main streets (for example when i went to lake district earlier this year on holiday, too many dogs and small children with ice creams around :)  ) on a normal walk where i stay i walk him on his collar and lead.
- By furriefriends Date 30.12.08 18:23 UTC
I agree about not leaving it on when free running. I have a k9 bridle which works well on my gsd. We tried halt and gentle leader but both seem to get in his eyes or rub a mark across the bridge (sorry forgot dog term for bridge of nose)
Like the upside of the garish colours my Dad has always been insistant that it makes him (Whispa not my Dad lol) look muzzlled and therefore dangerous .After reading all your praise my try one too
- By NEWFIENOOK [gb] Date 30.12.08 18:46 UTC
K9 cumfi head collars i have used for 3 or 4 of my newfies similar to an equine head collar brilliant product and made to order xl large ones only come in at about £10  inc p&p   have tried halti , gentle leaders but none have worked so well!
- By Malakai [gb] Date 31.12.08 11:07 UTC
I use Dogmatics on the Malamutes.... successfully except for one who does exactly what your husky does and flips it over his nose. He can do it without me realising. So my guess would be that your husky won't find a Dogmatic much of a problem at all ;-) Once they know what God gave them dew claws for, there's nothing stopping them!
- By Boxacrazy [in] Date 31.12.08 11:12 UTC
leather figure of 8 headcollar used here (was made by accolade leathercraft)
but I'm sure you should be able to get one from other reputable sources.

I've found this the best for my short nosed Boxer.

> I use the really simple ones made by Dajan (size 2 were only £3.80 each).

Do you know where I can get these-do Dajan have a website?(have googled but nothing came up).I saw someone at an agility show with a nice headcollar made of soft nylon and I think that was a dajan one.The dogmatic ones are good but expensive!
- By Brainless [gb] Date 18.01.09 18:18 UTC
They are usually at the shows.  they will be at the Exeter Livestock Centre on 31st of January.

I have a Tel. No if you PM me, so they can tell you where they will be next (they were at LKA and Manchester).
- By suz [in] Date 24.01.09 21:03 UTC
There is a new one available now called Canny Collar, its a nylon collar with a nose loop.  You can use it as a normal collar or hook the nose loop.  I have used it on a couple of strong dogs and found it to be very effective.
- By Hugos There [gb] Date 25.01.09 16:50 UTC
I have recently bought one of these for my extremely excitable pup.

I only use it in what I call high risk excitement areas, normally places where there are lots of people.
It works brilliantly, my boy will walk really calmly what ever is going on around him. :-)
