Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / DAP collars

Just wondered if anyone has used one and what were the results from using one. Did you go through more than one collar? What was the problem that you used it for??
I have a dominant dog who tends to be a bit of a bully when in a pack of dogs he knows well. I was advised that these collars are worth trying..
Just wondered on your thoughts..

Hi
I used two collars back to back a while ago;  I must admit I didn't see any changes.  I also used them in conjunction with a plug-in dap diffuser, which really P*ssed me off as all it did was leave a stain on the wall which will need to be repainted at some point!  :-(

In fairness to the collar, it was removed at various times for brief periods - I have gundogs and was not comfortable with the dog going into thick cover with the collar on.  Also, it's not supposed to be allowed to get wet if I recall so it got removed when swimming was on the cards.

The problem I used it for was that my entire male was becoming guardy/defensive of me when encountering lone males without dogs whilst out in remote areas.  This was as a direct result of having met a flasher, a druggie and a couple of other menacing undesirables in the past that I had had to ask him to bark at/see off.  I knew that I was getting anxious in such situations and had no doubt that that anxiety was being picked up on.......hence considering using DAP.  However, the  behaviour has now been successfully addressed purely through training in a counter-behaviour.

I have used both for the firework season.  Quite honestly I noticed no difference at all - mind you this is a dog that also fought against medication to keep her calm last year because she had got so upset with fireworks.  So the Dap is pretty tame.  Just being with her and keeping calm and quiet myself has proved more effective.   We have been getting fireworks again the last few nights.

I have used them, although not in use at the moment but I plan to start again in the New Year. I just gave them a break to see if they do work and IMO I think there was a difference. The bitch I used it on can be quite needy and unsure and I felt that she came out of her shell and more into her own whilst wearing it. She seemed to bbe more sociable towards other dogs as well. I do believe I have seen a slight decline since she's not worn it, so it will be interesting to see what she's like when I put a new one on her.
I had them on her for about 3 months, changing it every 5-6 weeks. I know it says 4 weeks but I think you can get a couple more weeks out of them. I also used the spray, not the diffuser, and I felt this helped a bit when we went to obedience shows. I keep that in my show bag!
Hope tha has helped.

I used DAP spray in the car as part of the training process as my dog was very afraid in the car after an unfortunate incident with the radio being turned on really loud right by his ear one day.
I used to spray the car with DAp, then go and sit in for a few minutes each day, gradually increasing to turning the engine on, then turning the AC on, then the radio on, then driving short distance, and so on. He was certainly less spooked with the DAP spray as well, and the training worked. He is still a bit jumpy in the car if there is a sudden noise, or a sharp stop etc, but will be ok for even long journeys so long as nothing strange happens.

Hi, i used the DAP diffuser and collar together for my dog who was obsessivley licking and i wanted to ensure it wasnt anxiety. Having used teh cat one i have miraculous results with it every time in terms of relaxing my highly strung cat. I noticed absolutely no difference with the Dog one but then again dont think the licking was anxiety just a strange breed trait ( she licks thin air! ). Would be good to hear a positive result from it though.

The behaviourist who has advised this said for me to start with the collar, put fresh yeast in his dinner and also give my dog Belladonna. He's got the collar on now and no improvement or change to note as yet(but early days). Looked at Belladonna but not sure what form to buy it in and also which strength(call to be made about this).
He has said with all this and some training techniques he's always had positive results.
He does deal with many dogs in our area which are on their way to be put down due to being so aggressive.

I'm always open to suggestions and also trying new techniques to different problems which arise during a dogs years.
