My oldest boy, 15, was very poorly on Friday and I took him to the vet. The vet was very pessimistic and gave him an injection of anti-inflammatory and said to take him home to say goodbye. I was given an appointment for 9.00 on Saturday. By the time I got the old man home he was much brighter and when I took him back yesterday the vet, a different one, said that it was his prostate. He gave him antibiotics and two lots of painkillers and said to bring him back in on Monday.

Dylan, the old man, is bright, eating and drinking (checking food for hidden pills though) and I can't believe the difference in him however....He has not done a poo since Friday morning and I wonder if an enlarged prostate can cause a blockage. He isn't straining to go or anything.

Has anyone got any experience of this? I would be grateful of any input.

An enlarged prostate can interfere with evacuation I would give him milk to make sure his stools do not get too compacted and mention it to the vet on Monday.

Thank you. He got some milk at bedtime last night but I will give him some more.

I'm afraid I dont have any experience of this but just wanted to say that I hope Dylan continues to improve and that he goes to the loo soon! :-)

You know my heart goes out to you, It may just be an infection, keep your fingers crossed. If not ,enjoy every day with him. Give him a belly rub from me. Keep his bowels loose. I will be thinking of you.

enlarged prostate can cause a blockage

Yes, it can. We had an old boy just like yours. Sam was a bit fragile for neutering but he did have the hormone injection (chemical castration).  As long as we gave him a suitable diet including a good squirt of sunflower oil - to keep his poos softish, he was OK. We had him for about another year and his final illness was unrelated.

Good luck with Dylan, hope you get to enjoy him for a while longer.

Success at last!! He got me up at 3.00a.m and did a poo. Today he is bright, I am trying to just enjoy each day with him. I am back at the vet at 2.30 so at least I can say he has done a poo...what a relief.

Our old Cocker had exactly the same problem. We made sure he had a good helping of 'oily' fish or a squirt of oil in his dinner.
He was given an injection every 6 weeks for his prostate and we had another great year with him...in the end it was just 'old age' that took him.
