Topic Dog Boards / Health / Petpassport Rabies boosters

I'm little confused with this.
Sasha was vaccinated in January 2008 with Nobivac and her in the petpassport it says valid until January 2009.
I remember my friend mentioning every 3 years so went on the Nobivac website and indeed it says boosters every 3 years.

http://www.intervet.co.uk/Products_Public/Nobivac_Rabies/090_Product_Datasheet.asp

On the DEFRA site it says boostering needs to be done according the manufacturers recommendations so I read this as she should be boostered in 2011?

Have I missed something somewhere or does the Nobivac need to be boostered sooner when it is a young dog or is this a vet error or maybe a change in the Nobivac "rules"?

I don't like over vaccinating and really don't want to vaccinate her if it is not needed to keep her passport active but as it clearly states valid till 2009 I suppose this means we will need to booster now wether it is needed or not! Grrrrrrr...

Could somebody who has passported pets have a look and see if theirs were boostered after a year?

hi, we have just imported a dog and her rabies was done in April 08 and in her passport it says she needs to be done again April 09, our vet has looked up the vaccine and it can be given 3 yearly but because the vet in Holland has put April 09 we will have to get her done again then otherwise her passport isnt valid.

ditto with me

our danish vet said the rabies booster is due 3 yrs later

we just did said booster with an english vet 2 weeks ago

he has now changed the booster time due in 2 years, as DEFRA says the vet has to go with manufacturers guidelines. the company was the same in both instances, merial.
but the merial website in Uk says 2 years.
he cant understand why the same company had 3 years in DK,
buy thems the rules he had to follow.
hes a vet and he found it odd.

thats because when the animal is less than a year old, it has to be done again 1 year later
then you can booster every 2 or 3 years, depending upon manufacturer.
that's a standard rule for everyone. happened with our young cat, but not all our other cats or dogs.

It was two yearly, but the last one I had was 3 yearly, but I won't bother to booster Lexi's (five and a half years old) again.

????? My Rjj was vax as a puppy & did not need another vax for 2 years

Thank you everybody!
It seems different countries have different rules for same vaccine!
I have just checked the finnish site and that says 2 years for the same vaccine english pages say 3 years!

I have spoken to Sasha's breeder and she has confirmed the rule in Finland is following: If the first vaccine was given when the dog was under a year old then the booster is given after a year and then every 2 years.
So the vet has followed the Finnish rules when noting the date down.

It does look like to keep her passport alive we will need to booster in January 2009 as this is what has been written in her passport.
However I believe as she will get boostered in UK the next booster will be needed in 3 years as this is what the english rules say.
I find it very bizarre that same vaccination supposingly covers an english dog for three years but a finnish dog for two years!
Not sure what would happen if for example took her back to Finland to show as their rules say boosters every 2 years and all vaccinations are checked at the gates...
The expiry date in her passport would be three years from the booster...

Don't think you're right there I'm afraid...I've had 3 animals done at under a year old, 2 needed booster 2 years later, as manufacturer stated, the last needs booster in 3 years...absolutely nothing to do with the age of the animal at all....can't even see any 'age' guidelines on DEFRA!!!

we had our young cat rabies vax in denmark. so we had the same situation as noora. under 1 yr and then 1 yr later. our vet said twas the same for everyone, but it seems that rule doesnt apply to the uk?
- By newfiedreams Date 21.12.08 20:17 UTC
I don't think it does, no, I wonder why they do it in Denmark?? Strange 'aint it?? Very confusing for everyone...you would have though that being part of the EU there would be agreement and ratification!
- By krusewalker [gb] Date 21.12.08 20:29 UTC
dunno, it is strange. noora's example was in finland. maybe all of scandinavia has this rule?

unless it is the rule for mainland euro but the uk is the odd one out?

Not always the case, the dog we imported in January who had his rabies April 07 isnt due till 2010.
