I'm thinking of getting a 6yr old female ST. Ex breeding bitch who now needs a new home. I hope she would be a good companion for my 8 month old Westie male. Does anyone have any experience of these two living together.
Would be grateful for any tips on how to introduce the two. My Westie is the friendliest dog you could wish to meet.

All I know about Scottish Terriers are the ones I see at dog shows, and a lot of them do not like westies, as this bitch is a lot older than your westie I would be really carefull how you introduce them to each other, I dont know if anyone on the board has scotties.
Irene-Westyholm Westies

I would introduce them in a park or someplace not in your home or there's. Then take you male someplace to a friends and bring the female home and let her sniff around the yard. Then you can bring your male back and let him sniff around since her smell will be there. Then slowly move to the yard together and see how it works. Then you can try the house. He's still a puppy I can't see there be any problems. I have other females (spayed) come over to play with my dogs. Just do it slow and don't rush, wish you the best of luck :)

HI there,
Hopefully the Scottie will have been around lots of dogs so she will be OK with shared attention etc.
As some have said let them meet in a park, possibly let them run around in the garden together.
There are a few Scotties at our local ring craft and my 2 westies play away fine with them.
Just keep and eye on the they should settle down together once they realise you are boss LOL.
It is like married in the first year..
Let us know how you get on.
PS my mum has a 3 year old poodle who was a bit grumpy and she recently took on a rescue dog and I think it has sorted his grumpiness out..

To all those who kindly replied to my posting re: Scottish Terrier companion for my Westie.
I've decided against getting her (Daisy). Everything was happening so fast. I thought i needed more time to make such an important decision. Maybe, maybe not at a later date.
Thanks again

About this here Scottish Terrier. My brother decided to have her. I brought her to my house yesterday. Not ideal for them to meet for the first time on his territory i know. Well it was mayhem. Daisy (S/T) had come into season early. Is it normal for a bitch to come into season early if she's been under stress.
Anyway today we met in the park and they got along quite well considering. Daisy kept seeing Buddy off if he got too close, other than that it was fantastic seeing them running around together. I think they will become good friends. The plan was to get her spayed before her next season so that plan has gone a touch pear shaped.
