Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Fish4dogs - changes?

I have been using fish4dogs as part of a 3 brand mixed feeding and have just recently found two of my dogs picking out and leaving the fish4dogs, virtually unheard of, the others seem to be eating rather unenthusiastically and when I check their bowls it's the Fish4dogs being left to last.

I had a few bags left and was trying to use them up whilst looking for / in the transition to a new brand, but think I may have to give up. Mine are also picking around the f4d and the poor output and gurgling tummies are continuing (only on day 4 of changeover) after three years of no wind and clean bowls it's quite a difference.

Louise

I checked out the site - at £45 it's a bit out of my price range.  Do you know what the breeder price is?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 29.11.12 22:18 UTC

Their website is rubbish. Specially now they've put moving snowflakes on ... they completely stuffed up my computer :-( They are very good on the phone though!

Nova, The link I gave shows the contents if you scroll down the page.
If you want to buy click on shop and you will see the prices. The website is a bit clunky but is all there, I have just found my way round by trial and error. They are very nice people to speak to and in my recent order sent me 2 Xmas crackers with dog treats in as a gift for my dogs. They are planning a new flavour early 2013.
I think they are more knowledgeable about dogs and food than they are about websites, but I know which is most important to me.

Having fed my dog with F4D for the last 4 years am now beginning to think I will have to change food is this because of the changes they have made? why you may ask in the last 6 months he has had a itchy back that I really cannot get to the bottom of , he has been to the vets, phisyo , hydrotherapy he is not itchy anywhere else on his body had slides taken at the vets no mites no fleas so frustrating am now beginning to think maybe an allergy and the only thing he had is this food, as he has in the past a real dickey tummy which I think is down to rice! Have been looking at foods and Simpsons seem to be good anybody using this?
- By Clumberjack [gb] Date 06.12.12 17:56 UTC
I'm still in the process of switching to Simpsons but am very happy so far. Dogs eating it well (despite usually being picky) and 'output' good. Pleased with service and breeder prices too. I'm feeding salmon and potato. Only time will tell whether it suits long term I guess, but a positive start.

mine won't touch the new f4d, we've changed back to taste of the wild. always great deals on zooplus and the fish version is great.

Prices on f4d breeder club have increased now to 40 per bag au revoir
- By Missie Date 09.12.12 20:57 UTC
Clumberjack, that's nearly identical to the email they sent me when I complained.
My dogs are raw fed but both bitches, when in whelp, have refused raw and preferred dry. I oblige with F4D and the pups are first weaned on the puppy f4d. However, this time mum refused to eat much of it and the pups were squitting everywhere when I weaned them. I took poo samples to the vets I was so worried about them as it wouldn't stop and they pooped all week like this. All tests came back negative so the only thing it could have been was f4d food. The raw I ordered arrived on the weekend and within 24hrs they were back to 'normal' and have been ever since.
They asked me for the barcode and batch no. but on the plain white bag (had ingredients nothing else) there was NO code or number anywhere.
Won't be using it again

The code on the breeders bags of F4D is embossed on the top of the bag - the bit you usually cut off.

Afraid they have had a very serious letter from me this morning, as I'm convinced we nearly lost Gordon with torsion when we fed the changed food with no prior warning from the firm.     They have offered a free bag of food in compensation...I don't think so.        Trade Descriptions.........

Have just received 1st bag of  Millies Wolfheart have given 25 o/o tonight, hoping for good things and the end to the ITCH! great service, christmas card,+ money off next time, cracker for the dog, and their own fb page will keep you posted
- By sillysue Date 10.12.12 18:47 UTC
Good luck with the change over Butler1, A couple of weeks ago I attempted this with my dogs and Millies. They picked out all the Millies and left the F4D, so they were eating ALL Millies instead of a mix, so I gave in and just fed them the new Millies with no slow change over. They had no runny tums and were absolutely fine considering it was a very fast swop of foods, they love it. Also lovely people to deal with at Millies.
I am well pleased.

Great to hear some feed back will not be afraid to change quicker, can't come soon enough hope it will stop him itching xx

My lot seem to have embraced the fish4dogs changes with the addition of the pea and are wolfing it down....no problems and they're on their third delivery so its interesting to read some of the comments here as I havent noticed any adverse changes.  I did wonder if it would affect them but so far everything seems to be same old, same old.  Mind you, I do add the trout mousse as a topping...spoil them rotten no doubt!  I suppose not every diet can suit every dog but luckily I've been feeding fish4dogs diets for years and my lot have fab coats and firm poos!!  Just ordered some of their treats for christmas presents for friends dogs too.........love christmas!  Yippee!

Hi there, i am not an expert but i hv been told that salmon can carry a bacteria that whether cooked or not, is NOT harmful to humans but CAN be deadly to dogs. I believe that boiled chicken and rice or boiled chicken and cooked carrots is good for a dog that has an easily upset tummy. In all fairness my two get tinned food with mixer biscuits and get a dog treat for breakfast n another in the evenin, its very rare that their poo ends up bein sloppy. I hope you find a suitable diet for yr little one. X

We were recommended the Angellpetco as well and the dogs all seem to like it. Also add a splash of their salmon oil now and again as well

Not just Salmon but any anadromous fish (fish that swim upstream to breed) can be infected with a parasite called Nanophyetus salmincola. In the main this parasite is relatively harmless. The danger occurs when the parasite itself is infected with a rickettsial organism called Neorickettsia helminthoeca, it's this microorganism that causes 'salmon poisoning' which is actually Rickettsial disease.
But!
The instance of this are on the American West coast, as the Organism's Vector ( to the Salmon ) is a snail and the snail is incident to this part if the States.

I'd be interested to know of cases in the UK??
- By Brainless [gb] Date 04.01.13 08:40 UTC
and I understood cooking did render the salmon safe????
- By ridgielover Date 04.01.13 10:15 UTC
I've been pleased with the Simpsons Salmon and Potato. Dogs are looking good and like it - mind you, they'd eat anything!

Not just cooking but freezing too:

The Seafood Network Information Center (US) advises: "Cooking fish to an internal temperature of 140*F will kill all fish nematodes and tapeworms. Normal cooking procedures generally exceed this temperature."

About freezing, the information center advises: "Parasites become a concern when consumers eat raw or lightly preserved fish such as sashimi, sushi, ceviche, and gravlax. When preparing these products, use commercially frozen fish. Alternatively, freeze the fish to an internal temperature of -4*F for at least 7 days to kill any parasites that may be present. Home freezers may not be cold enough to kill the parasites."
