Burns is well lnown for keeping dogs lean, which in many cases is a good thing, but not in others.

>Pro-kolin stops it but I don't wanna go thru 2 tubes a week at a tenner each!
Can understand that! Although I always have a tube in stock (from hyperdrug.)
I have a toy breed, and some do seem to be prone to being loose. I have found a huge improvement since I put them all on Dorwest tree bark powder.
I buy far less Pro-kolin since putting a sprinkle on their food daily. It comes with a small scoop, and I guess your boy would need a level scoop daily on wet food. You would need to give it chance to work, but I don't see what you have to lose by giving it a chance.
Hi Rafferty.. Do you mean the lamb and potato or salmon and potato from Simpsons.??? I cant rate their food enough.. Its is fantastic. One of my dogs (small breed) had a problem with colitis, loose stools, diahorrea etc since a puppy - since he's been on the Simpsons Lamb and Potato - (20 months) he's not had a single loose poo!! All of my adults are on the Lamb and Potato and pups are on Salmon and Potato.....
It would also be worth ruling out Giardia - if your boy has been snorkling in dirty water..
Hi Cattiamaria - yes Simpson's, but the Chicken & Potato rather than lamb and Potato - happily discovered that as he's obviously a gundog I can get a 15Kg 'breeder's bag' for £28.20 + pp even tho I'm not actually a breeder and he's not working; told them this but it's simply a gundog qualification!
Anyway, happy to confirm that he's only had one diarrhoea bout, and that only a 24hr one, since he's been on it (3 weeks now) which is a dramatic reduction - would previously have had at least 2 longer bouts in that time. Sorted by pro-Kolin again, though the new feeding regime of 3 smaller meals daily and no added water helps. Needless to say I'm delighted with the Simpson's - not only going well with his gut problem, but he's a fussy eater as mentioned and positively likes it - even picked up a few dry kibbles spilled on the floor and munched em of his own accord. Then there's the great price for a real quality product - very simple and quite pure ingredients; + the fantastic service. I phoned and got straight through to Lisa Simpson, the bag was delivered 2 days later! The only thing it hasn't helped with is his rather stary coat, but Spins aren't exactly noted for their shine, and of course it's early days yet.
Interesting you mention Giardia - I had to google it! Worth bearing in mind, as there's quite a population of wildfowl, esp geese, on the reservoir and their droppings are everywhere, but there again he doesn't have much wind which is one of the chief symptoms apparently, and the vet didn't pick up on it tho I mentioned the reservoir-side walks to her. Will keep you posted!
Hi Jean - had previously tried him on Keeper's Mix or Easy-Green (the latter during hot weather) but not the tree-bark, so will give that a go, many thanks for the tip. Am remembering that when I had my own gut probs a few years back, also used some kind of tree-bark tho can't remember what or if it helped!
Got my pro-Kolin from Animed via Amazon; great service and bit cheaper at the mo (just under £8 + pp).
Thanks everyone for the helpful responses, advice and great info!

i feed burns and find it lasts ages and its not to exspensive also its not to bad picking up there number twos after .... not like the cheap food that gives them really stinky breath poos and gas !! lol

A few months ago I changed my dogs onto Orijen. Before this they were on a good, but cheaper food as I had a GSD as well and couldn't afford to pay more for the amount of food eaten. However since losing my GSD I only have 2 smaller dogs ( a patterdale and a C. Spaniel ) and find that on the Orijen they need far less than with the cheaper food, so even though it looks very expensive in actual fact because I feed less then it is not too bad on price. They both look amazing on the Orijen, shiny coats and good poos, and a large bag lasts a good 7 weeks, so around £8.50 per week for the 2 dogs.

5 Elkhounds (20kg) eat under 1kg of Arden Grange, so cost £14 a week to feed, 15kg bag lasting just over 2 weeks.

Special offer prices on fish4dogs at the moment, breeder prices only £26 15kg bag. Friwnd rang me last night so ordered salmon, sardine and two puppy.

Look up www.thegreendogfoodcompany
They have a very 'natural' approach to feeding dogs. Dried food. In 2 flavours only. Turkey and Lamb. They use human grade food and organic where possible.
No more expensive than James Wellbeloved. Delivery is fast and efficient and very, very cheap. If you phone they give you as much time as you want to chat.
Very knowledgable, friendly and ethical. They keep the ingredients simple.
Would highly recommend. Have recommended to quite a few doggie friends all whom have converted. Dogs who have had skin allergies and 'stool consistency problems' have responded amazingly well.
Give them a try - I'm sure you won't regret it.
I tried to open the site but site could not be opened and showing error.

Natural all the way for our girl!
Natural Instinct all the way!

Tried everything and this is the best so far! www.Honeysrealdogfood.com
All the foods you named are good as are a lot of others, my own dog has been fed Iams her entire life, as was her predecessor. In her lifetime the only ill health she has had was Kennel Cough around 2005, apart from that no ill health of any kind.
The diet & enough exercise relevant to the individual dog are 2 of the main factors in maintaining good health well into old age, the link below is to my dog today age 11 years 7 months & Iams all her life, but, to repeat, all the foods you mentioned have good reputations I dont think Iams is better than them or they are better than Iams, health throughout life is the real judge.
