Topic Dog Boards / Health / 6 wk old pup sedation?
- By Kasshyk [gb] Date 03.10.07 09:59 UTC
Hi All,
One of my 6 wk old pups (bred by myself) is at the vets. Came in yesterday after shopping to find him limping on his rear leg with no weight bearing. Went to the vets last night and he said his stifle joint felt funny and suggested xray with sedation. I asked if we could try without and vet reluctantly agreed. 1/2 hour later Vet said we got the xray fine but developer was on the blink and could we come back this morning.
So went in this morning saw different vet and again went thru the sedation/no sedation discussion(argument!). He agreed to try without in the end, but I said if it was absolutely necessary I would agree as long as they rang me 1st. Anyway my usual vet rang about 1/2 hour ago and he will need sedating, Ive agreed but I now sat here worrying like hell that it won't go well.
Sorry for the long post but need some reassurance?
Thanks in advance
Angela

Hi Angela,

Obviously there is always a risk with a GA or sedation but the vets weigh up the pros and cons for this. I had a 7 week old pup have a ga and worried like mad about him. He was fine and came round really quickly. I insist that my vets use rapinovet with all of my dogs as it is fast acting and they come around quickly. He may be sedated with acp or thyo but again the incident rate of anything going wrong with a healthy animal (young) is very minute and these are very good sedatives. I am sure that all will be well

How's the pup doing?

Hi
Sorry took so long to reply and thanks for the reassurance. Puppy is doing OK he was xrayed with the sedation and was fine(breathes sigh of relief). Thankfully his stifle looked fine on the xray and he is now weightbearing and back to his full on self. Being my first litter on my own I got rather worried but I suppose the next litter will be easier!(live in hope!).Still have no idea as to what happened but most likely scenario was mum caught him jumping into puppy pen. Thanks again, Angela
