Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / crying when given a bone
- By Hamster [gb] Date 27.09.07 13:31 UTC
Whenever I give my young Golden a marrow bone or a chicken wing she seems to get quite distressed ! She runs around with it in her mouth and cries. She acts as if she doesn't know what to do with it for 5 mnutes or so before settling down on the lawn to munch it! She has had a fair few in her 14 months but her reaction is always the same. Any ideas?

I don't know but I have had Goldens behave like this with squeaky toys etc, they sound like they are crying. I think it may be their way of expressing excitement.

Yes I agree as Labs often do this :)

Yes that's Golden happiness. :D

Yep, Goldie excitement! If Hamish finds something delicious he struts around with it in his mouth giving a muffled moaning sound. Once you take it off him he can let the noise out and runs around, head in the air, oooh, oooh, ooohing!

Don't worry this is Goldie bliss. All of mine do this to some extent.

Our collie/lab cross does with squeaky toys too, after a minute or two it turns into a full blown howl, head back just like a wolf.  I love it, OH just worries that the neighbours will think we're torturing him!  Have explained to them though so they don't call the Scottish SPCA :)

Our Dobe girl does this with bones, chews, pigs ears etc. We think she needs to bury it because she'll wander and head for the back door. We don't want a dirty old bone dragged around the house, so OH takes it off her and hides it(she knows where:rolleyes:), waits a couple of minutes then gives it back to her:rolleyes:. Yes she says, that been buried and will now taste better:rolleyes:, then settles down to eat it!!!! Dogs, they are completely bonkers.

Merlin cries everytime he sees my sister out of sheer excitement. If he spends too long in her company he howls too. It's very funny.

ok, first, I dont know if you should be feeding chicken bones, as they can splinter and get caught in the thraot.

secondly, my girl does it, and it started with impacted puppy teeth.  When I took her to the drs to get them removed, she felt better, but was still doing it.  She will do it with rawhides, stuffies, and squeakers.

Very common thing, I would think.

Chicken wings are given raw, and there isn't a problem with that. It's cooked bones of any sort that shouldn't be given to dogs as they splinter.

If it's just excitement then there isn't much you can do about about it, except get some ear plugs ;) If it's more like pain then I would get her mouth checked out by the vet.

ah my goldie Lucy does this whenever she gets anything nice and new, it's like she makes her funny noises, runs up the garden, puts in under her bush then comes in the house, then straight away goes back up the garden to her bush to get said bone and brings inside to show everyone, then its up the garden down the garden and so on for a good 5/10 minutes before she settles down with it!
