Just back from vets after rushing in Tia's little yellow baby boy.... he is now on a drip, AB injections, anti sickness injection and had elektrolyte subcontaneous injections to rehydrate.. a very very sick little boy... no idea what is wrong, he went downhill very quickly... litterally two hours... from snuffling around and playing, to high temp, heart racing and vomitting...

Vet is phoning me after 6pm...

please keep fingers crossed for him
- By AlisonGold [gb] Date 26.09.07 14:23 UTC

Thats a worry Kay with such a young pup. Great that you noticed so quickly though and he's getting such prompt and intensive care. Fingers crossed he's home soon. Positive thoughts winging there way there :)
- By kayc [gb] Date 26.09.07 16:06 UTC
thanks everyone.. sitting staring at the rest of them.. geting paranoid..,..

Vet has just phoned.. puppy has had 3 bouts of dire rear full of blood.... vet did ask about poo's, but Tia is so fanatically clean that all is cleaned up before I got a chance to see anything... vet is changing type of drip and will phone me again later this evening

all other pups have just finished swimming their way through baking tray of goo...  fingers crossed, they seem fine
- By Daisy [gb] Date 26.09.07 16:38 UTC

thank Denise...

Vet has just phoned... no more sickness, and just one little bout of dire rear since last call at 5.30... still blood, but not so much.. he had a little water and glucose, and at 9.45 had about 15mls of Welpi... and kept it down :D , he is also sqeaking a little, which is a good sign, he was so very quiet and still... so although not out of the woods (vets words) he hasnt gone any further down than when I last spoke to him at 5.30... vet is staying till around midnight to try more Welpi, and then going back in around 3.30/4am.. (I love my vet :D )  told him to phone me.. dont care what time it is...

again.. fingers crossed
- By Daisy [gb] Date 26.09.07 20:48 UTC
Fingers still tightly crossed, but glad that it sounds better :) :) :)

Just seen this. Keeping fingers crossed he's over the worst,
and quickly improving! Your vet seems very dedicated, I wish
every breeder had a vet like yours!
Thinking positive thoughts,
Karen

Hi is brilliant Karen.. when I needed him to come out midnight on the Snday to give Tia an oxy jab, my bill was HUGE... a whopping great £30 :D   A small practice of farm vets... anything, anytime... I know my boy is in great hands
- By RRfriend [se] Date 26.09.07 22:12 UTC
Like I said, we all should have a vet like that!
Your little boy seems to be in the best of hands.
All there is left to do is to keep fingers crossed,
and hope you'll get a reassuring phone call in the morning!

Thanks again everyone.. would have updated earlier but lack of sleep last night meant I fell asleep on sofa tonight (embarrassed smiley )

1st call from vet was at 9.50 this morning, pup was slightly better than last night, no more sickness, poo like water, but no more blood... and had kept down 3 lots of 15mls whelpi... midnight, 4am and 9am.. I went in to visit him at midday, and he was sitting up, (last night couldnt even lift his head) ..  Spoke to him through the perspex and he pricked up at hearing a voice (would like to think he recognisedme, but doubt it lol).. and tried to come over to perspex.. so he is fighting :D

vet phoned again at 6pm tonight to tell me that poo's are now semi runny :D  heading in the right direction.. staying on drip again tonight with vet going in again for feeding... and will phone me around same time tomorrow morning...

I cant believe the difference in him today, once I saw him, I came home so much happier.. Last night the vet didnt give much hope, and I too didnt think he would make it.. Vet says, still not out of woods (his words) but he is heading in the right direction.. hopefully will come home tomorrow, but vets says he will leave the cathogen, (is that the correct word?) in just in case he needs to be hooked up to drip again...

We still have no idea what has happened or what caused this.. all other pups are doing great, even if rather tired... I keep prodding them when they are sleeping...
- By Brainless [gb] Date 27.09.07 20:17 UTC
Had they been recently wormed?  If so I would try something different with this pup when they are next due.
- By kayc [gb] Date 27.09.07 20:37 UTC
No Barbara..they had not started worming programme yet.. funnily enough I just got the Drontal puppy on the Monday, but hadnt given them it yet..

I do have a theory, but it IS only a theory.. Tia (mum) had some raw mince.. had been in freezer for a while, so have no idea just how long so obviously sell by date not in use.. BUT.. this little boy was the only one near her after eating.. and I just wonder if for some reason mince just might.. only might, have had something to do with it, could it have been so slighty off that I hadnt noticed :(... I have been racking my brains to try and find what the trigger could have been..

Darlington was my last outing, 11 days ago.. and no-one has visited house... IF I had brought anything into the house, it would have manifested long before now ??
- By Brainless [gb] Date 27.09.07 20:44 UTC
Mysterious.  Wahtever the reason I woudl be a bit wary of worming him though until his tum is 100%
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 27.09.07 21:05 UTC
It's just as well you didn't give them the Drontal, or you'd naturally have thought that was the cause. I wonder how many other times medications get blamed for something they didn't cause?
- By kayc [gb] Date 27.09.07 21:20 UTC
Its certainly food for thought JG... and you are right, if I had given them the wormer, possibly my 1st instinct would be to lay blame there...

Since whelping, Tia has been on either puppy food or tripe and terrier meal.. the evening before puppy took ill was her 1st meal of raw mince.. following morning puppy was in a serious condition... Its the only thing I can think of as the trigger
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 27.09.07 22:28 UTC
Ahh glad to hear that pups doing better.

My poor mum's having a hard time with her latest litter. All were doing well until yesterday and one's quite ill again!  Such a heartbreaking breed that my mum has, so glad that I have my Spanish.

Unfortunately though parvo has a 10 day incubation period, but I'm sure that your pup doesn't have that as I would think that it would be the first thing to be mentioned.
- By kayc [gb] Date 27.09.07 22:56 UTC
Parvo is one of the other things that crossed my mind Diane.. which is why I have been glued to the other pups.. prodding etc. .just to make sure they are just sleeping and not fading.. but vet did say, that if it had been parvo.. at least some of the other pups would show some signs even if they didnt go downhill quite as quickly.. so far all other pups have been just fine.. eating, playing.. and poo's have been normal.. no changes ... but obviously will be keeping a very close watch over them during the next few days..

:( sorry about your mums pup, I know she had hearbreak last time too.. like you I am glad that I do, on the whole have a good hearty breed.. I dont think I could cope with what you mum has been through over the last couple of years...

And although I have had some rough times with my pups over the last couple of years.. Mast cell tumours, cancer, kennel cough induced pneumonia etc.. never had a 'sick' puppy... if that makes sense

fingers crossed your mums little one pulls though
- By AlisonGold [gb] Date 28.09.07 14:13 UTC
Glad to hear he seems to be on the road to recovery.

Vet phone this morning around 10.30.. and said he had gone downhill overnight, mostly with his poo's becoming runny again.. I mentioned to the vet that it might also be the welpi not helping to 'thicken' him up.. I have only used Welpi a couple of times.. and found it made puppies loose.. I told him I used Lactol.. he asked if I could bring some in (they dont stock it) so I went in around 11am. took his baby bottle in with me.. and he suckled like a little pig :D  only gave him just over 1ounce though.. (normally at his size and age would be taking around 6ozs..) at least I got to cuddle him and feed him today.. and he squeaked and snuggled up into my neck (puppy not vet  :P )..  spoke to vet, he wanted to keep him in for a few more hours on drip.. and said I might be able to bring him home this afternoon, he would phone me later...

Vet phoned about an hour ago.. and suggested boy stay in overnight again.. :(

Will wait on update tomorrow

Edited to add.. all other pups are still doing great.. so it seems to e isolated to this little one
- By Daisy [gb] Date 28.09.07 18:23 UTC
Sorry he's not home, but he's in the best place until he's better :) :) Glad that the others are fine - you've got enough to worry about :) Let's hope that the different milk will help :)

Ahh sorry to hear this got everything crossed for you and the puppy!
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 29.09.07 18:49 UTC
How are things going?  Unfortunately one of my mum's pups has died but the other one fortunately is coming on well and their sister has up to now had no problems.

Oh well off to mum's now to go and see them.

Got everything crossed still.

- By kayc [gb] Date 29.09.07 21:03 UTC
Oh Diane, I am so sorry.. thats heartbreaking :(

My Little man came home this afternoon.. feeling very sorry for himself... could be better but getting there.. not as bright as he was yesterday, but I am putting that down to the pain in his leg.. he has slept most of the day.. but feeding well... and had a playful growl at Hunter when he stopped to sniff crate on way past  (dont you just love the gurgly growls of 4week olds :D )

Its his leg that is giving him the grief now .. poor wee man, his leg and paw are treble size.. and very painful where cathogen was.. and obviously cannot use it.. has difficulty in walking.. and screams if it is touched...but hopefully swelling will go down pretty quickly..

Just glad I have him home :D
- By jane [gb] Date 29.09.07 21:12 UTC
Fantastic news!! Its such a relief isn't it when they come home. Hope he is feeling much better soon.

- By Lokis mum [gb] Date 29.09.07 21:48 UTC
So glad he is on the mend, Kay - they go downhill so quickly (and then recover just as fast) when they are so little!

My hunch would be that he tried some of Mum's mince, and it was too much for his tum....

Ahh brilliant news, so pleased to hear it.

Went to see the two remaining pups tonight and they are doing wonderfully, phew.  Only thing is he wants attention all the time so keeps crying out for a cuddle!!  So of course I had to give in and gave them both a cuddle and got plenty of licks back off them :d

Hope all continues to go well for you and all of the pups.

- By kayc [gb] Date 30.09.07 14:26 UTC
Its hard not to give in Diane ;)

:( I had to rush little boy back to vets this morning.. his paw is now a huge paddle and rock hard.. , infection has set in and he has lost 2 nails.. vet says he will lose the others... I cant believe the horrific screams of pain.. more AB's and anti-cortisone injection.. Its so hard to watch him like this :(
- By satincollie (Moderator) Date 30.09.07 14:40 UTC
Oh Kay I'm so sorry to hear this little man is having such a hard time still ***Healing thoughts*** heading his way and You look after yourself aswell as we know we all tend to put everything we have into our puppies especially whenthey need that extra care.

Luv Gill
- By kayc [gb] Date 30.09.07 14:52 UTC
Thanks Gillian... I am fine honest ;)

I have put him back in with his siblings... I think being on his own was too distressing for him.. he is now suggled up and sandwiched between them and sleeping... his original problem seems to be over, although he didnt eat much for breakfast,  at lunchtime I let him feed with the others, and I think that encouraged him.. he did use some bullyboy tactics to jum the queue when Tia jumped in to open the milkbar :D

Back at vets 8.50 tomorrow morning...
- By Harley Date 30.09.07 15:49 UTC
Fingers still crossed for him here :)
