I want to start giving our boy some bones from the butchers, (i'm sure he must be tiring of pigs ears now) but i don't know where to start. When we bought him home the breeder gave us a cows toe????

(although it had to be chucked as he was sick on it as he gets car sick!!)
Do you know if these are any good and if not anything else you can recommend?
Thanks

I visit my butcher nearly every weekend and ask for marrow bones for my dogs, they love them and spend hours chewing them!!!
I think most RAW fresh bones are ideal for dogs the more the meat on it the better!
Is it something you have to supervise?
Our boy currently takes his pigs ears and chews into the garden as he appears to like peace and quiet whilst he has them!

It depends on your dog really, I only give bones to my dogs when I am at home, they take them into the garden and spend hours out there chewing away!! Aslong as there are no 'thin' bones they are quite happy.
I have also taught my dogs, and children to respect each other when bones are around, my dogs will allow me to take their bones away from them with no grumpy episodes!! and my children can play in the garden while the dogs have their bones, I believe all dogs and children should be taught how to respect each other so that no accidents happen with protection over bones.
Yes this is something we have tried to instill in our children also (although he hasn't had bones yet but we do it with pigs ears), he seems to be ok with us taking food etc away but we do keep doing it occasionally so that he is always used to it!

If you shop in Safeway, you will find them periodically. But not all the time, if I see them I get a couple for the freezer.
HTH
Karen ;-)
What are they labelled or is it ok for any large raw bone?
Also at what stage do i throw it away? (our little man can take days to chew just a pigs ear!!)

Throw them away???

Sacrilege! Like a fine wine, raw bones appear to improve with age  Mine often unearth a long hidden bone and go at it as enthusiastically as they did when it was fresh. And once they get really old, they don't smell for some reason

Mind you, my boy can reduce the average large knuckle bone to mere shavings in about an hour so it must be the Newf that squirrels them away for 'later'.

Marrow bones, just in the prepacked butchery bit, at the beef end,
Karen ;-)
Thanks

Safeway is now morrisons (has been for some time) and I have yet to find one that is willing to sell marrow bones? They will sell you lamb bones by the bucket load, I know because I have a freezer full. They will also sell fish trimmings, salmon heads etc. Never seen any marrow bones and I deliver to them so am in several stores daily

ETA I think some of the old safeway stores were sold to sainsbury's so they are not all morrisons.......

Ah...................but in Guernsey thats where they will be! I got one on Saturday so they are still doing them here.
Karen ;-)

That would have been a cows hoof, and they are my favourite long lasting chew for my medium size breed. they do have a distinctive aroma whilst being actively gnawed, so best given when you are going out or outdoors if you object to it.
oops, i think i was worried in case they went off....
Where do you get a cows hoof from?

Where do you get a cows hoof from? The bottom of it's leg nearest the ground :D :)
You can find them in pet supply shops. Our local shop sells them but they may have them in PAH :)
Unfortunately living in Guernsey we don't have the delights of PAH, I will have a look round our pet shops though!

Yep but you have plenty of Cows :D

Probably, most people would chuck them in the bin when they get to the really manky stage but since it's never caused mine any bother and they only have them out in the garden; I just leave them to it. I do occasionally have a bit of a clearance when the garden starts to look like an ancient burial ground might just have been unearthed :D
I am a bit of a one for chucking things out when they get dirty etc...i am the opposite to a hoarder!

I am sure though that he would probably love them even more when they are at the "manky" stage so i will have to restrain myself...

Hi,
You can order cow hooves online from www.ebay.co.uk/the doggy-snack-shack or phone 0208 500 2680. I picked up a leaflet at S.K.C from the stall that sells all the dog treats like hooves.
I also get marrow bones for my crew every Saturday but must admit to throwing them out after a few days as I get anxious about them going off.....stupid I know!!

Are the cows hooves cooked ?
I can't remember if ours was... sorry
Thanks for the link also

No, which is why I like them.
Thanks,
I picked him up a raw beef bone last week from our supermarket but he licked the blood and a bit of the raw meat off but i left it there for nearly 3 days and he showed no more interest in it!

Should i wash them first and get the yukky stuff off?
Yet he loves the one i bought from the pet shop which i think is artificial and has chicken stuffing in it!!??
