Last night after dinner, we had lamb chops, my oh was scraping the plates and a bone from the lamb chops fell onto the floor. Toby snatched it up and as he knew I was going towards him to get it off him he swallowed it really quickly. Toby coughed but seemed ok. After giving oh a lecture on being careless I went and sat down. Toby came and snuggled up really close and thats when I knew something was wrong and I immediately knew the bone was stuck. We took him to the emergency vet who x rayed him to make sure the bone was there. The bone had lodged further down than in his oesophagus than they thought. They decided to operate and push the bone into his stomach and then remove it. They rang to say the bone is wedged and they cannot move it. He may need referral to a specialist as they may need to go in through his chest to get it. Needless to say I have had a sleepless night. I have to collect him just before 8am this morning and then take him to my own vet, the emergency vet will fax a report to them and they will decide how to proceed. I feel in shock as it all seems to have happened so fast. I am in a state of panic about the surgery today as the emergency vet along with the good also had to give the risk of complications. I am so worried I just keep thinking how he looked at me last night with such sad eyes I don;t know how I'm going to get through today.

Aww Jane you poor thing!
That's an accident and you need lot's of hugs too.
These greedy dogs with eyes bigger than....please dont beat yourself up about it and for goodness sake dont worry about the 'what ifs'. You must only ever face a problem as it happens, or indeed if it happens.

Ahh thinking of you all today especially your husband.  As Karen says it's just a freak accident and nobody's to blame.  Hope all goes well later.

Oh so sorry to hear this, but please don't blame yourselves it could happen to any of us, and probably has but with not so bad consequences - I've got everything crossed for you and please keep us updated.

Oh Jane - do hope that things are better now.  As the others have said, don't beat yourself up about this - it could happen to anyone of us who has a greedy dog!

I hope your boy recovers well. :)  I hope everything will be ok.

But please don't beat yourself up, most dogs do it, all ours do however could I share a little training tip with you that sometimes, might give you an extra few seconds ahead of your dog to pick something up you don't want them to have?

I am awful at dropping things, I am clumsy and often when dishing up dinner I will drop a potato or something, or getting stuff out the oven and chips will fall on the floor etc and with 6 dogs in the house there's often afew at least who will be straight in ASAP however what I drop is normally hot!  And the dogs picked it up very quickly that if something got dropped and I said to them "hot" that is was hot and they couldn't hold it in their mouths.  They will now go upto dropped item of which I will say "hot" and they suddenly stop and touch it with their paw first and drag it along and then gently pick it up and make up their own idea, however in that time of you shouting "hot" and the dogs slowng down you might be able to pick the said item up off the floor.

It's something I never went out to teach my dogs but just happened.  If I don't say hot they find out for themselves the hard way and normally drop it to pick it up again.  But in the kitchin that could just, in the future, give you some extra time, after all we all drop things on the floor now and again and when we do it's fair game for the dogs. :D

Oh goodness, what a thing to happen! Keeping everything crossed here for Toby to be well. And like others have said -it was a freak accident, it could have happened to any one of us.

Oh poor toby, and poor you and poor OH. I hope everything goes well today, it was an accident and Toby is lucky to have a mum that rushed him straight to the vets :)

Thank you all for your replies. I am feeling very emotional today so they have made me cry. We picked Toby up from emergency vet and our own vet referred him to Bristol University. We left him knowing there was a chance that he could need drastic surgery and a lengthy stay. The journey took us 2 hours and before we arrived home we had some fantastic news. The vet has managed to push the bone into his stomach where the acids will dissolve it. I cannot tell you the relief that we feel. He is awake but they are not giving him food today. Tomorrow he will be x rayed again to make sure there is no damage to his oesophagus and if all is well he will be fed. The vet will ring me in the morning and all being well we can go and bring him home. We are so excited its like fetching him home for the first time! We will feel much better once he is home. Everyone has been fantastic in treating Toby he has received excellent care. Thank you all for your good wishes. It is so comforting to have others that understand.

Glad to hear the good news lets hope all goes well now and he makes a great recovery.
One of our first Bernese swallowed a piece of knuckle bone and after two days of to'ing and fro'ing to the vets, trying to find out what was making her so sick they put a camera down her throat and found the bone lodged just at the point where the oesophagus passes the heart and she was rushed off to Bristol for and emergency op, with a slim chance of survival due to it's possition so near the heart. Two days later and many pound notes lighter we brought home a very sad but mended girl, So I know just how you must have been feeling. Jodie went on to make a full recovery but it was touch and go at the time. Thank goodnes your vet managed to move the bone on without the surgery.
And of course it was not your fault I bet there isn't one of us here who hasn't had a dog wolf something down before we could stop it, and don't they just do it all the more quickly when they know you don't want them too and they think you are goin to take it off them...Little B*****S

Am so excited and nervous at the same time this morning! Can't wait to fetch Toby home but I am nervous waiting for results of x-rays. Vets are ringing between 9 and 10am then hopefully I will be going to get him. It feels like christmas today:)

Toby is home!!! Not completely himself and seems uncomfortable after eating his dinner.
I have been advised to feed him soft food for a week. He usually has James Wellbeloved so am looking for alternatives but I am worried that I will not be giving him a balanced diet. Tonight I gave him some Naturediet and this says its a complete food so would he be ok just eating this for a week. I am planning on giving him some chicken and rice but am not sure whether a week on chicken and rice is healthy. Your advise would be much appreciated.

Nature diet is a good complete food and he will be fine eating that alone. Glad he is home and hope he's back to his normal self quickly.

I  think he will be fine on that for a week :) I feed raw and the diet is balanced over a month so Toby having just chicken and rice for a week should do no harm at all:)

Soak the James Wellbeloved, you can then mush it up and let him eat it like a porridge. That is what I feed tiny puppies on and at least he will be eating his normal food. So glad to hear that he is back safe and sound.

How is he now ? As people have suggested soak the JWB ;)

Hi Thanks for asking after Toby. He is much better, each day he seems to be more himself. Still a little quiet but he is a a real "man" when he is ill and milks it for all its worth!! He has to go back to my own vet tomorrow for a check up as sometimes apparently due to inhalation of saliva when the bone was stuck they can develop pneumonia. I don't think for a minute he has this as he is improving nicely thank goodness.
