I'm after the jab for my bitch to stop her season (shes due in November) an occasion has come up that we just cant avoid and her being in season is going to be a problem... Shes not likely to be mated for a few years yet if indeed she ever will be so if it messes up her seasons we can live with that..
Does anyone know when to get it done is it the 1st day of her season? i have also heard of a tablet form if anyone knows anything about this i would be grateful..
Thanks.

I believe its better to just go and get the jag now. A friend who shows afghans just gets her bitches injected twice a year and they never come in season. Personally I wouldn't do that, but I have used the jag in an emergency on the first day of a season and it worked well. It took 4 or 5 days I think it was for Meg to completely come out of season - she came back in as normal 6 months later, was mated once, and had a lovely litter so no ill effects with it.

If it is delvesteron, the first time it is given is just before or the first days of a season, then 3 months later then four months and after that every five months.
I used it on my first bitch who used to go stir crazy when in season, but would never use it on one I intended to breed from now. when I finally got her spayed her Uterus was full of cysts.

Thanks Jane & Barbara :)

Brainelss if that is given, how quickly does the season stop? I'd never normally consider this, but right now I am just about to. My oldest bitch has come into season TODAY which would mean she'd be at day 17 and 18 for Belfast and could not go (we'd be staying with a friend with entire males, and this girl flags until day 21 at least so both accommodation and show itself would be impossible), and we have planned Belfast for a long time, am meeting up with puppy buyers etc (it's the last show with a ticket for this year and the first time they have it there) so I'd hate to miss it or not bring her. She is due to be spayed in January anyway as she is 7 ½ and won't have any more litters so I figure it may be worth risking it this time. Am trying to get an appointment for tomorrow.
why would you not use it on a bitch that later on you may decide to mate?

Too risky. Know too many people whose bitches have not had normal seasons again afterwards, have developed pyometra etc.

It should interupt the season or postpone it usually for about a couple of months which is why they jab them again 3 months later.

Cheers.

I've also heard of a number of people whose bitches have never had a proper season again or other health problems later. I wouldn't use it myself.

I have also heard a number of dogs that have died of bloat or bone cancer in our breed thats all it is hearsay, sometimes life isnt perfect and we cant all do things that should be ideal for our dogs...(and without scientific fact i'll go on my own judgement thanks)

Well if you didn't want to know peoples opinions or anything good or bad that happened with this why post on here? You could of asked your vet exactly the same question and I'm sure that they would of given you the answer straight away

The the Vet or the company making the product are the ones to advise really.

But it isnt your opinion is it? its your friends  (hearsay) you havent experienced it not that i was asking anyway all i was after was what day to give it...

That is OK if the bitch's fertility isn't vital to your bloodline. Otherwise why take the chance with her fertility, if you aren't planning to breed simply get her spayed once fully mature.
hi, someone once told me about an injection or tablet that i could get for my bitch to stop her coming into season once, i was interested in this so that i could leave my dog and bitch together, however when mags is old enough i was wanting to breed from her, is this the tablets/injections yous are talking about and would yous recommend me not to do it.

Would not do it for a bitch that is going to be bred.
Unless you start the treatment BEFORE the season starts, the bitch will still have to be kept away from male dogs for about a week. My girl was injected on Friday, the second day of her season, and she's still flagging today.
ok thankyou, its just i am really dreading separating them, i know i should have started separating them from day one a bit but its just so hard.

Not nearly as hard as raising a litter of puppies.

it's not hard with one and and one bitch...We manage, no problems with 2 bitches and 2 dogs. For afew days one time we had 3 bitches in together as they all came in within 2 or so weeks of eachother. We managed fine, using doors, stairgates, cages, common sence and being VERY careful. We also tend not to have visiters round at the time of bitches in season just incase someone leaves a door slightly ajar.
It's not hard and you will always have to do it, every 6-9 months for 3 weeks at a time, including when you breed your bitch...Then you will have to keep male dog and mum awith pups seperated for at least a week or so really, just to let mum have the pups to herself.
I would advise you invest in a cage if you haven't got one already. Makes life alot easier during seasons to keep them seperated (I'm not saying you leave te dogs in their all day and night though)

its not the fact that i mean i would find it hard to keep them separated i have a kennel, cage and play pens, its more to the fact that i cant imagine them being on there own because they have always been together, my bitch relys on my dog a bit to much which i know i should not have let happen, but i hated leaving my dog on his own and company was one reason i got my bitch.
