Topic Dog Boards / General / New Trails - Advantages of an Old Dog

Jet and I just had such a lovely walk.  She's getting pretty old and rickety but still wants her walk and particularly likes little narrow single track trails through the bush.  We found one this morning that went by an old stone barn foundation, past some really big old hemlocks and looped back to where we started.  Lots of other doggies going on walks there so some nice sniffs for Jet and we were done in 20 minutes.  Perfect.  We are doing trails I never considered when she was younger because they were too short.

In 26 years of living here I had never walked around the little community park behind my house.  Now it is a perfect 10 minute morning outing for Jet on work days and she loves it.  The neighbours get a kick out of seeing the cats come with us.

On some walks we hardly get any distance at all if the wild berries are good.  Who would have thought slowing down and "smelling the roses," so to speak, would be one of the advantages of having an old dog?

We all need to slow down and 'smell the roses' from time to time ;)
I love the image of the Cats coming with you! made me very Nostalgic I used to have a Maine coon who did this *sigh*... nice memories :)

My two year old walks like that now. I think it takes us 30 minutes to go the last quarter mile - on the way home that is. :-D Well, even when out and about he spends a lot of time carefully examining every square inch of ground and every leaf in between bursts of running. I'm trying to talk Miss Frilly Knickers into walking at the same pace but she's usually goes everywhere at 30 mph.

Two of my girls are getting on a bit now, 10 1/2 and 12 years old. Which is quite an age for my breed. Our walks are nowadays short and slow. Very slow :p I think especially Tella's nose is not as good as it used to be. Her eyesight and hearing is definitely not what they used to be,and judging by the time she spends at each interesting smell, her nose too is getting old.
This means we're standing still more than walking, but I don't mind. It's quite relaxing, really. Of course I then take Effyh for longer and faster walks, so I get enough exercise anyway. Funny how she adapts to the pace of the oldies when we're out all together, and then likes "power walking" when out with just me.
Old dogs are wonderful in so many ways. Slow and relaxing walks is just one of them!

Couldn't agree more. I love taking Charlie out (15 next month). It is all soooo civilised in comparison to the lunatic walks with Hattie, who can't do anything slower than 90 miles an hour! At the moment I'm doing 3 rounds of walks: Hamish, Lottie and Winnie together, Hattie on her own, 'cos she's so mad, and then Charlie, to help me wind down.

funny you should say that. I have taken to doing 2 walks. First for the younger 2 that hare along at break neck speed. Into everything and nearly knock you over.
Then Gemma who is now only up to a short walk round the block :( Even though she still think she is a puppy, and every so often bounds along for a few paces before slowing right down again LOL
Gemma is 10 1/2 and even 4 years ago I never thought I could let her off the lead anywhere but the countryside with no cras or anything around.
Now I walk out of my door with her wuith no lead. I dont use one unless we are going near a main road, the block I walk round is a very quiet housing estate so no risk!!

I love older dogs - they're so much more comfortable and 'user-friendly' than pups and youngsters! :D
