has anyone fed venison too dogs or hounds....any one have any thoughts on doing so?

Certainly Elg Venison would be on the menu for my breed in Scandianvia. think they woudl go on strike if they didn't get their share.

I've never fed it to my dogs personally but a friend of mine who used to own a deer farm fed the bones to her dogs all the time with no ill effects :)
Debs

No chance....any venison in this house would never make it past OH to get as far as the dogs! However, I would have no qualms about feeding it if I had a readily available source.

I tried it on them a couple of times, but they wernt keen.Probably because of it's low fat content?? I dont see a problem with feeding venison as a part of a varied diet, but i think it's too lean to feed as a main part of a dogs diet.

Carcass yes, meat no. The meat is too precious and it's a very healthy meat too. We love it here and it's wonderful eating something that you know where it came from.

OHHH I love venison,Im afraid venison bones yes they could have but the meat NO WAY.

Mine have had a few deer carcasses - spine, ribs and legs with plenty of meat still left on, when a friend in work shoots them. They love it, and it has no ill effect on them :)
I've discovered it's best not to give them the carcass in the front garden though as they do look a bit like a small person, maybe the postie :D

LOL! :D :D

No because if any venison makes its way into this house
I eat it. (It comes in packets, should have been clearer, I've never had random deer knocking on the door yet!). But if I had sufficient for some reason so I felt willing to share with the dogs I would be happy to feed it to them.

thanks everyone. we have just got a new stalking contract and we are reluctant to take it up unless we can utilise it (meat) because at the moment we shoot maybe 5 a year and we dine on venison non stop (venison chilli, venison lasagne, venison shepherd pie, venison bolgnese, roast venison, venison fillet steaks. venison casserole, believe me there isnt anything i havent done with it yet!!!

..........

even our own home made sausages but we simply couldnt eat any more than we do!! It would mean having to take out an extra 8 hinds a year more so we wondered if we could mince it up for the hounds, maybe mix with some tripe to bland it out a bit!!

Im free to come to dinner anytime to suit you.
Are you not able to sell it to friends and family though?

Venison.............
I was offered 8 legs for £50.......is that too dear!!!

Yes thats two deer
2 deer x 4 legs = 8 legs

depends which legs.....if back legs then its a bit on dear side definitely but at least theres some meat on them....if front legs then someones ripping you off as their only use is as a couple of spindly dog bones and would normally be binned!!! Also they must be licensed to sell it.

Mine eat road kill deer, half a Roe buck in the freezer at the moment. Just saw a piece off now and then, they love it.

And you give that to the dogs???

Marinaded in a little red wine and bay leaves, you've got a wonderful dinner.
