Someone has been using my OH 's bank card number and has bought stuff for over £2000 online. We have no idea how they got the number because he never uses his card online, only to pay for the shopping at Tesco. He bought the shopping on Tuesday night and on Thursday and today there have been loads of transactions on the account that we knew nothing about. We only found out because someone phoned him this morning and said that there had been 2 transactions on his paypal account and he doesn't have a paypal account (he thought it was my one so was ready to lecture me I think). He then got a message to call his bank, then a call this evening from an office supply firm asking if he had bought items for £800+ from them (he hadn't) When he called back the bank, they said it was the credit card fraud department, but then asked for his card number so he hung up on them :-) . He then phoned the normal number for our bank and discovered that all these transactions had gone through - no idea how as there wasn't much cash in the account, the other bank number was also genuine, can't believe a fraud line would ask for your number :D LOL. Anyway it'll be interesting to see what we 'bought' as the transactions appear, apparently one was for £1000. His card is cancelled and we will get it all refunded once they reckon all the transactions are through but its very irritating. He is really annoyed because I use my cards online all the time and he thought it was my card that was the problem, but it is his :D

Oh my god that is awful, lets hope you are reinburst quickly

I know how annoying this is because it happened to me last year. In my case I had supposedly bought several thousand pounds worth airline tickets on internal flights in India. That was alot of Rupees

Anyway the credit card company sorted it all out.

It's maddening though.

Yes same thing happened to us as well. Again credit card company sorted it, we didn't have to pay any of it, and got a new card.
- By MariaC [gb] Date 25.08.07 08:43 UTC
This is terrible, hopefully the credit card company will sort it out for you soon.

I was listening to a programme on the radio about credit card fraud, and the guy giving advice said only ever use one card for online transactions and keep a limit of £250 on that particular card.  Sounds good advice, but I think we've used most of our cards online at some time or other - but might be worth considering!

Thats terrible!

How can someone do things like this, and how to they get the informatiuon more worringly :(

Hope you get sorted soon and they catch who did it.

This happened to my daughter a couple of weeks ago ,but it was her debit card they were using She had bought some stuff on line, and fortunately, on the Saturday night she went on line to check how much she had in the bank. She discovered that not only had they emptied her account (she is a single parent and only had about £100 in it) but they had also used her overdraft of £100 and she was owing the bank this £100 as well. The transactions were all in Euros and were from an EU country Thats all they could tell her.She had to phone the fraud section on Sunday, but fortunately she had used her card for petrol on the Friday night in between the fraudulent transactions,so she was able to prove that she couldn't have been in a foreign country one minute and here the next. As it was,she had to wait for over a week before the money was put back in.
I have today got a letter in from the bank saying I will be getting a card reader for some  on line transactions,so wonder what that will do. Actually, the RBS site was hacked in to a couple of months ago. I logged on and put in my security details when prompted, but each time a red notice came up saying " Those are not the details we have on record for you"I kept thinking I had put in the wrong digits and tried 3 times, when it advised me to re-submit my details. I was halfway through doing this when i stopped and thought why do they want my account number and sort code?.But because it was the official RBS site and I had logged on to it,I thought it was Ok. I didnt continue with the log in and cancelled the screen .I then phoned them and explained the problem The clerk insisted that I must have been putting in the wrong digits ,and connected me to the site.A few weeks later I logged on to find a message saying that the site had been "hacked" and that if you had given out your bank details you were to check your account, and contact them ASAP.I checked and mine was Ok ,but I realised that they had every digit of my password and security code so I immediately phoned and changed them.
If they can hack in to the bank's official site ,what chance do you have of protecting yourself from fraud? The latest one is from the Inland Revenue saying you have overpaid by £83 and please submit your bank details so they can refund you. Do that and they will empty your account  very quickly. The credit card companies will have to come up with something else to stop all this fraud, but it seems the hackers and criminals are always one step ahead.

It was my OH's debit card too. He never uses it online, its always my card we use so it was very odd. I phoned Tesco to ask if anything had been wrong with their tills as this was the last place he had used it, but the girl said nothing could have happened as they don't store any bank stuff with the chip and pin system, I found out later that he had had to sign at the till ! He is going to phone the office supply company who phoned us to check to see if they have a delivery address for the goods that were bought and if the address is in the Perth area I think we will be giving mr tesco another call

Personally I wouldn't bother :) :) Similar happened to us last year (??? ). We got very irate to begin with and thought we knew the source of the problem - but we had a chat to our local police :) Your credit card holder is the person to investigate this and the local police (and Tescos) won't take very kindly to people making accusations :D :D :D You won't lose out monetarily, so I'd just put it down to experience and try to forget it :) :)

I know exactly where your coming from Daisy :) . It annoys me though, I know I will get my money back but at what cost? This type of crime is what leads to higher insurance rates, higher prices in shops and so on. I know that Tesco won't do anything, and that the police do not deal with card crime, because the banks really don't want us to know how much of it goes on, but I will still inform Tesco if the address is in this area, because that is the only place the card is used. I'm not particularly upset about it, i don't even see it as a personal crime, not like getting your house burgled (yes that's happened to me and my parents), it just bugs me that people are getting away with this - and we wonder why society is falling apart

My OH had a letter from his credit card company last year to say that his account had been suspended to prevent fraudulent activity.  He rang them to see what it was about and they said that there was a transaction on his account for $1 which made them suspicious.  Apparently this is a technique used by scammers who randomly generate credit card numbers & test them by making a small transaction, usually for $1, to see if they've hit upon an 'active' credit card number.  Once they know they've been successful, then they use that number to make large transactions.  Luckily, the company were on the ball and no further purchases had been made.

My husband had his credit card refused once when he was on a day's booze-cruise to France, and the company knew we lived in the UK! It was annoying and embarrassing, but somehow reassuring!
- By ShaynLola Date 25.08.07 22:01 UTC
I had done a lot of on-line shopping one particular day and then registered for ebay using the same credit card a few hours later.  The CC company rang to check that the card was indeed in my possession as the level of activity that day was unusual :)  I felt very reassured that they do seem to be keeping a close eye  for fraudulent use.
- By Daisy [gb] Date 26.08.07 09:57 UTC
When our credit card was copied the credit card company rang us up to tell us. Only 2 x £100 had been taken out, but they picked it up straight away as it was by cash withdrawal and we never withdraw cash on our credit cards :) The check systems that they have in place are marvellous, but can't stop the transactions quickly enough to prevent them in the first place - requires a pattern somehow. We have also been contacted to check that we have made a big/unusual purchase :) :) It's very difficult trying to keep ahead of these very determined criminals :(

well this morning i had a rude letter from the county council to say my payment for council tax had been refused:confused: so went onto online banking and to my horror my account has been cleared out:eek: by some b****rd (bring back hanging I say!!) who had bought very expensive mobile phones and a fortune in top ups on my debit card!!! Now i have only ever used this twice and both times it was FLOWERS DIRECT:mad: so be warned, some thieving little swine who undoubtedly works for them is a fraudster. Bank now on their case. Am starting a petition for resuming national service and the birch:cool:

Am starting a petition for resuming national service and the birch

I'll be right behind you Sam :-)

Joking apart that is awful.  Hope it won't leave you too short till they resolve.

Thought I had better just check my online account to see what OH had spent over the weekend (stag weekend in Blackpool but cant remember how much he spent!) and noticed that I have had 3 payments of £21 come out on 20 August and another amount on Sunday   I did buy something on 20th for £21 but only the once and certainly not on Sunday.  Just got off the phone to the bank who are on the case!

Normally I dont check my account on line (unless I want to know how much I have to spend before I go on a shopping spree ;)) but I will certainly do so from now on!  This is the first time anything has happened and we use our cards all the time (on-line and in shops) although when out and about I am extremely careful when inputting my pin and I certainly dont let anyone take my card away to swipe (restaurants mainly)

(oh and yes OH has had a ticking off!! ;) :D :D)

Well I can't actually bear to go online and check what the damage is, I hate checking the account at the best of times and although i checked yesterday it hadn't been updated cause of the bank holiday. Ho hum, if only we could live without money! (I wish I lived in Star Trek world :D )
- By craigles [gb] Date 29.08.07 21:20 UTC
This is oh so common isn't it?  I don't think I realised the scale of the problem.  Hopefully you'll all be reimbursed fully and there wont' be too much problem getting cards replaced etc., just so inconvenient at the best of times.

Makes my blood boil, I would rather give the money away than someone steal or try to steal it!
- By shadbolts [gb] Date 31.08.07 08:18 UTC
It was my OH's debit card too. He never uses it online

Doesn't have to.  There's been a problem with this at one of our local garages apparently one of the staff was copying debit cards and selling the details to someone abroad where they don't yet have chip and pin (I believe it was somewhere in eastern Europe).  The first people new about it was when they started seeing payments for things like internal flights in Poland (or wherever) going out of their accounts.
- By shazbrat [gb] Date 31.08.07 19:28 UTC
Yep happened to us to:mad: its was nothing to do with the supermarket or online transactions, our details were obtained using a device on a normal cash machine. Our bank called us as they thought something was amiss because whoeve had got hold of our details was using them to live the high life in Germany:rolleyes:. The bank asked had we taken a holiday over there recently and my reply was no we dont have passports. We had to produce allsorts of documents just to prove it could not have been us before we got our money back. We got it back in the end but its just the inconvenience of it all and knowing that it actually HAS happened to you because you never think it will be you.
