Topic Dog Boards / General / Dog wee smell - help!!???
- By hebeboots [gb] Date 21.08.07 22:07 UTC
Hi all!
I have a problem with my hallway. Or rather the smell of it! As some know I have three male dogs (2 entire, one neutered). I've been fairly lucky so far, they've been known to mark in the house  but nothing I couldn't cope with. But since Oscar the baby has matured and is clawing his way to the top, they've been AWFUL!! Their main area being my hallway which has lino tiles. (should count myself lucky it isn't the carpeted lounge :D)I don't like to keep their belly bands on them too much so during the day and evening its wee wee competition time. I mop, I clean, I mop again! Its endless at the moment!!
The problem is, as much as I can clean etc there is a definate 'aroma' in the hall, does anyone have any tips on a magic cleaning secret that will eliminate the smell?? At the moment I soak up with kitchen towel, then clean with soapy water/mop, then spray clean with cromessol at night when they are in 'in bed' in the kitchen.
They only do it when I'm in (which is most of the time as I work from home) They know they shouldn't but apparently can't help themselves
What with them and the cat's questionable toilet habits I think I'll go back to reptiles! :D :D

Thanks
Lins xxx

I used stuff out of Pets at home. its an odour remover and i wash my floors with it (neat) every few weeks. It certainly worked when we were house training a very stubborn setter! Bicarbonate of soda is meant to remove smells from carpets etc too I think

Equal measures of white vinegar and water work - a breeder friend of mine recommended it to me - it works :D

i use "simple solution stain and odour remover" i buy it at dog shows ....i expect a search will bring an online source.

I don't like to keep their belly bands on them too much

Whats a belly band?

I'm not sure what the one is in this case, but I used a belly band on Spangler, it is a band about 5 ins wide and about 2 feet long with a handle each side, and you put it under their tummy and take the weight off their legs - it helps them to walk!

can understand that, its just that the post sounds as if its not for a walking aide, so i was a bit ..........not that it takes much at my age :D :D :P

I think it is a belt that you put around them and it soaks up urine - I think but don't quote me  on that :)

Oh right! Thanks, don't think my boy would have ever kept it on though :D it would have been well chewed after the first 5 mins :D :D

If the Cromessol is the 'Very Berry' one you might find that using strong scents just provokes your little piddlers to 'over mark', so I'd also say Simple solutions may be your best bet as it has a very slight scent (bit like amerretto mmmm!)

You know tho Lins.. you've got more of a training issue here than you have a smell issue. you cant live like this hon!
Jumping Jillickers!! If they were sibes you'd have to have arm bands never mind belly bands!! :D :D you'd be swimming!
I guess I'd probably fall in the Dunbar/Donaldson camp that this (marking) is a housetraining issue.
Get yourself some Simple sol. but start on Operation 'eagle eyes' watch em like a hawk... interrupt as you see the leg cocking with a "Ahh!" or "outside!" (not a shout, not designed to be a telling off, just a command) take him out and immediately reward when he goes.
(some say putting Baco foil down in the fave 'marking' spot helps turn them off to going there)
This might take a week of hassle and diligence but isnt that preferable to a lifetime of a wiffy home! :D
Plus I expect the little tinker will be a happier dog for having you take the territorial stress off him :)
Good luck x

I know Liv, I'm really hoping I can train them out of this! Little terrors - I know what you mean if I had big dogs I'd need scuba diving gear to live here :D Since Oscar started, its been all of them, and I'm very lucky if I do catch them - they are so sneaky they should be secret agents!
A penny dropped while I was mopping again yesterday.. as I'm a dog groomer (thats mainly when they strike - when I have a dog on the table that I can't leave) I have a variety of dogs traffiking through the hall every week, although the clients don't pee there I'm guessing thats enough for my boys to keep stamping their 'this our house' stamp on the hall?
I guess I'm just going to have to be even more vigilant - when I did catch one in the act they haven't done it in that particular spot since. I'm going to have to be quicker than them! But boy they're so fast!
Why did I get bichons (dirty lil toads) and why did I get boys?? Was I mad?! :D :D Ah well - on to house training... again!  Wish me Luck!
(I tried the foil... they peed on it )

P.s yes belly bands are soft material bands that have a tena lady pad in them to catch 'accidents' or 'on purposes' as I like to call them :D :D I should have realised when I bought them from the bichon club  :D

Right off to PAH for some Simple solution....

If you have hard floors use it neat first then just use it like normal floor wash stuff. It is really good.
- By HuskyGal Date 23.08.07 19:15 UTC
Aaaah I see! Appologies! yes that explains it....

>dirty lil toads<

ROFL!! and they look soooo angelic!! butter wouldnt melt ;)
Are they used to crates? maybe an idea if they are, when you cant get away from a client to give them a kong maybe and some quiet time in the crate.. then supervise when they come out and sniff once client has gone and lots of praise reward?
Boys aye! ;)
- By hebeboots [gb] Date 23.08.07 20:08 UTC
Yeah but they only look angelic and they all do their very best sweet angelic look when they see me discover their latest puddle :D And Oscar is quite possibly the naughtiest dog on the planet!
Mmmm good idea about the crate, the two bichons could be crated (although Oscar thinks thats a place that definately needs regular hosing ) but not Marley.. probably something to do with his unknown past, he goes into screaming hysterics if he's in there for a nano second. But as the bichons are the 'lead piddlers' that may well be the answer!

As I type I just caught princess Geordi about to leg lift in the hall - Hooray! busted!!

I'm now off to eat the offensively large piece of gateaux I bought home from my sisters party :D :D
