My aging Golden Retriever bitch [13] has been diagnosed with Horners Syndrome.
Apparently it only ever affects one eye[thank goodness].
It looks awful with the eye shrunk into the head and third eyelid right up.
The vet said shes not in pain and will have to see if any other symptoms occur as there are several causes for this.
He said it may right itself ,it may not.
Shes ok in herself although her sight is affected on that side.
Shes on Metacam for now as she reacts badly to Prednisolone, which is what first choice of vet was.
I just wondered if anyone had experienced this with their dog.
Many thanks.

Never heard of it but some information about it here in fairly easy to follow terms that appears quite encouraging.

Thanks for that Isabel.
Hopefully she will recover from it,as shes such a sweetie i hate to see her like this, but as long as shes not in pain,we can live with a droopy eye.
Im just praying that there are no underlying causes for this, but we will deal with them as and if they occur.

I have had it in one of my bitches. It is fairly common in GR's. In my case the eye wasn't too bad, certainly not as bad as you are describing. Her eye is perfect now and in fact I wouldn't be able to tell you which eye was affected now.

Thankyou for that Alison, and im glad your bitch wasnt badly affected.
How long did it take for her to get back to normal???
My girls eye is quite bad. My son calls her Zombie eye [bless].

It did take a few months. Did your Vet do an X-ray to find out if it was idiopathic or not?. I believe the cause of my girls' was the pulling on the lead as it can cause temporary damage to the nerve. What I would say is don't be tempted to use the eye drops that the sites telling you about the condition tell you you can use (phena...... something) as what that does is to open the pupil more which means that you would have to be extremely careful not to let her out in bright daylight as it could cause damage to the eye as she won't be able to control the pupil. Just better to let it heal on its own. If she is a puller then maybe go to a harness for the immediate future. I'm sure she will be fine. I also know of friends with Goldens that it has happened to and theirs have all repaired in time.

No he didnt do x-ray.
Its encouraging to know other peoples dogs have recovered,so fingers crossed mine will too.
Thank you for your help as everyone i spoke to had never heard of it.
She doesnt pull on the lead so its not for that reason, she just woke up like it one morning.

Jonelle.
