Can dogs swim naturally or do they need to be taught??? With SBTS seems they need to be taught! :)
Just a general question!

Rach85, that's so true.  Mine couldn't swim until she was 3.  until then she would go in water and paddle and if it was too deep she would sink to the bottom and bounce along the bottom, occassionaly coming up for air.  When she was 3 she eventually started swimming and hasn't looked back.

Mine have all swum naturally, though Henry makes a performance of it - 'help, my eyes and nose are the only things showing' sort of thing! :-D But I have heard of dogs who just don't know how to swim and will literally sink to the bottom if they fall in.

Many years ago we could not understand why our first spaniel did not seem interested in water, we had expected them all to enjoy it.  Down at the harbour one day, my Hubbie thought she had been a whoosie long enough and dropped her off the side of the slip way into about 4 foot of water.  She made no attempt to move at all!  She just sank down, all the time looking up at us in a "How could you drown me" sort of way   Hubbie immediately reached in an hoiked her out and she seemed cheerfull enough after a shake but never again! :)  She always hated water really.  We walked across Morecambe Bay with her once.  We expected to have to carry her through the deeper river crossings but never realised that Hubbie would have to carry her virtually all the way as she would not even get her feet wet.  Every dog I have had since has been a water and mud  magnet so I quite miss her ways of walking yards around puddles :)

Ours could always swim. My BC saw a dog swimming so he suddenly ran and jumped into a deep stream when he was 12 weeks old and he could swim...fortunately!

Sounds like Tara :D She paddled in the stream when she was very small, until one morning when it had rained very hard the night before - she took a flying leap into it only to find that she couldn't stand up in it :D :D The current was quite strong, but fortunately she got the hang of swimming and managed to get back onto the bank :D Bramble hated going into any water deeper than a few inches. However one day his friend, a large GSD, accidentally pushed him into the river and he/we discovered that he could swim :D :D He didn't like it tho' and hasn't swum since :)

Well as you know I have Spanish WATER Dogs   Umm, Lana she loves to swim.  Anton loved to swim until his coat was rather long and I think it really weighed him down one day and put him off swimming, he will do it but not as eagerly as when he was a youngster.  Lydia my oldie adores to go swimming.  Lastar totally adores it.  Carmen likes to have a paddle first and then you can't get her out, just takes about 15 minutes to get her in there though and Carina, well Carina's Carina   She did used to swim until she realised that if she kept jumping up and down eventually with the waves she made the item would come in so why should she bother getting her head wet :d

At our local water park there's a really deep bit on one side almost as soon as you go in, Carina will dive in this bit, but swim no!  She's weird :d
