Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Feeding RAW when in whelp
- By goldengirl Date 31.07.07 14:37 UTC
Took my girl to be mated last week, and she is raw fed.
My question is 5-6 weeks in whelp should I change to a puppy complete food or stay with raw?
I want to raise the puppies on Royal Canin puppy, as this would be better for the new puppy owners, and the one I keep will be fed raw as soon as I've chosen one, about 6 weeks.

She was fed on Royal Canin up until 2-3 months ago, when I changed to raw.
I'm not going to change anything until I know she is in whelp.

Any advice anyone??

I've not been on the board for ages so only just seen this.  I personally would keep your bitch on raw & then when weaning times come, wean them onto raw also, why would you want to go from the best food to junk   If you haven't got it already I would recommend Billinghursts "Grow Your Pups with Bones" as it's really informative both pre-mating, pregnancy & so on.  I've now had 4 litters on completely raw for both Mum & babies & wouldn't dream of giving them anything else :)  I've had no problems with puppy owners & raw fed pups, approx 75% have remained on raw, the others are on Naturediet.  I send my pups with a comprehensive diet sheet (having gone through it all in detail as many times as possible prior to pup leaving home) & 2 weeks worth of raw food.  I do arrange for Naturediet to send out Puppy packs as I feel that if owners can't cope with raw they'll handle the ND better & it's as close to keeping the pup on a natural diet as possible :)

I hope that helps, feel free to ask if you want any further info
