Just been on Agilitynet to check to see if a show had been cancelled and saw an article about an accident that had happened with a dog gate.  The person who had written it had come home to find one of his dogs had tried to jump the gate and had got legs tangled in it and had been hanging there for some time.  I was horrifed when I read this - I leave my dog behind a gate everytime we go out.  We usually close the door too but I know that my dog can open the door and will jump the gate when she is frightened.  Luckily she seems calmer now when she hears thunder but I know that fireworks will start her off.  I have the gate to keep her out of danger!  

I always shut the door if I go out (when I ahd one that could open it I put a latch on to stop her), just because they might jump the gate.  they used to jump the lower baby gate al the time.

My YT male was killed by the dog gate :( He had put his head through...he was very slight...then he must have pulled back quickly...I had dropped a pan lid in the kitchen, he broke his neck :( My vet said it was very unusual and that he must have had a weakness, he was 7 years old, his litter sister was sitting next to him wondering why he wasn't getting up :( I had the gate to protect them from my dobes when I wasn't around :(

Accidents are just that though - accidents. I was thinking about all the don't let your dog play with sticks/drink out of puddles etc the other day when I hit my youngest in the eye with a tennis ball I have one of these plastic ball throwers, which the collies love. I tried to fling the ball, but it didn't come out until near the bottom of the arc - and went straight into poor Gems head at close range. The poor wee souls second eyelid is still prominent and she still has a bit of swelling :(  I'll still play with the ball thrower though, just be a bit more careful :)

I agree Chaumsong...it was just an accident, I've had the gate for years and I've still got it now.

We had a problem of the gates getting knocked off the door, so instead bought a plain wooden door and sawed it in half -instant stable door. Much taller than a gate and solid, works brilliantly.

Our gates are never closed while we are out as the dogs have the run of the house.  Mind you, Shay worked out how to open the stair gate anyway and when Lola couldn't figure out how to open it, she simply tore it off the wall   Anybody have any recommendations for a Newf-proof stair gate?

Bramble doesn't bother with trying to open the dog gate from the kitchen into the hall - he just goes round the long way opening three doors in the process :D :D :D (Kitchen to dining room/d/room to lounge/lounge to hall)
