Topic Dog Boards / General / Broken canine tooth (fang)

Just noticed that Vinnie has broken one of her canine teeth:rolleyes:  Heavens only knows how she has done it - and she's done it since Monday.  She has broken the top right off.

Is a trip to the vet essential?  Or can I just keep an eye on it?

How far down is it broken? I'd suggest a trip to the vet is necessary to decide whether it needs to be extracted.

If its just the tip of the tooth and she is ok with you touching it then it should be ok my girl lucy done the same when she was carrying her litter and i took her down to the vets he said since she was ok with us touching it it wasnt causing her any pain and would be fine but if your worried i would still pop her down to the vets and i still never found out how she done it.

My BC broke his too some time in his last hour or so in boarding kennels so goodness knows how he did it. but broke it badly and  it split the root so it had to be removed. I think it's if the root is exposed or damaged that it is a problem..

It healed fine but it was a shame because he used the tooth to hold toys and after that some toys or games he had loved before were no fun for him..goodness knows why but I'm sure he had his reasons. I guess they felt different held in three prongs.

Tara's broken both the tips off both her canines :( Probably chewing bones as she doesn't chew anything else :D :D Unless catching her rugby ball has knocked them off :eek: I'll ask the vet when she goes for her boosters in September, but hadn't really thought it too serious as it doesn't seem to bother her :)

Zan -10yr gsd- was in the vets yesterday for a full dental and check as he is 'off' kibble and hard stuff, as he had quite a bit of tarter vet thought that was probable cause hence dental etc,
ANYWAY his front incisors and upper canines are all worn down quite a lot but were not removed as no damage to roots and 'above gum' damage doesn't cause toothache in dogs like it would with us.

Molly some how chipped the back of her fang a while ago & like many others haven't a clue how. I was told at the time by a CD'er it may go brown , which it did. I now brush it regulary along with her other teeth & the fang is getting whiter, so I guess healing itself.

If you want to keep shoving her it can be root canalled so that she can keep it (yo7u'll need permission to show from the KC), otherwise if the pulp is exposed it will need puling.
