Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / should i use him

hi i was wondering if anyone can help, we eventually want to have a litter of my bitch, since i cant use my dog as he has a luxating patella does this mean i cant use my dogs brother who has got the all clear for his hips and knees, since this is a hereditory condtion and was told that the condition could go back  a few generations in his pedigree.

Hmm, well I'm not using my boy whose sister has SM, of course that's a more serious condition than the patella. Do you know if your boy's parents are ok? How about his other brothers / sisters?

well i dont no about the other brothers but this one is my friends dogs so thats how i know about him, also the sire and his family are all well known  breeders and i think they are fine, not sure about the dam but we did ring the breeder to tell him and he said she was fine but i guess you never really know untill you get them checked.

I wouldn't.  It has to be best to aim to exclude health risks to the very highest degree and it is not as if there is any shortage of possible studs in your breed :)

i no i did think that, isnt it weird to think though,  i guess alot of people are breeding dogs that dont no they have it or that are just in there family somewere.

Shame you got the dog with the problem otherwise you would have gone on oblivious to the problem, but in all conscience I couldn't breed from the brother knowing the problem your dog has.

A really, good, conscientious breeder will really check into the lines get to know the lines breeders as way back as possible to make sure you have done your best to irradicate problems and be breeding the best of the best. Most people when buying pups will check that the parents of those pups have had all relevant tests and that is absolutely fine when buying a dog as a pet, show potential or a worker, but to buy in preparation of breeding you need to be extremely thorough, much more so than buying a dog/bitch for other reasons no matter how many champs they have in their lines, breeding is a whole different kettle of fish.:-)

Make sure you actually see the certificates too.

Probably best to stay away from that line unless you can be sure of all the dogs in the first few generations. What points do you want the dog to bring to improve your bitch? wHAT ADVICE HAS THE BREEDER OF YOUR BITCH GIVEN TO YOU?

well when i bought her we did not know he had a dislocated knee, our bitch is from excellent lines that are very hard to get a hold of, we wanted to keep a pup and a few people we knew wanted one. also we wanted to use our dog because i just beleived he was the nicest springer i had ever seen, he is  exactly what we wanted in a dog. just a shame i cant use him.

Plenty of good Springer studs for you to choose from, so now the research into their pedigrees and what they produce starts, have fun.  You can have your boy castrated and it will make home life so much easier :D  So every cloud has a silver lining.

yeah i was thinking of having him castrated even no i really did not want to, think i am going to get her checked first tho to make sure we can breed from her cos if she had any problems i would then have to get her neuted anyway. there is a few springers we had looked into just finding abit more out about them.
