Topic Dog Boards / General / HELP PLEASE!!! DOG BLOOD DONOR NEEDED!
- By luvhandles Date 04.07.07 16:42 UTC
Hi - I don't know if anyone can help, my cousin has just phoned me her 2 year old golden boy Alfie is very poorly - he has an auto immune problem and now he's having serious reactions to injections and his blood platelets are very low - they have been told unless he has a blood transfusion urgently they will probably lose him. She phoned to ask if I could offer my two to donate but they aren't big enough (cavaliers) Vet has told her the donor dog needs to be border collie size or bigger?? Can anyone help - we are in Preston, Lancashire. I know this is a lot to ask but she really is desperate - if no one can help, do you know of anything we can do?

Thanks

Hayley

Hayley have you tried Lab rescue as I am sure one of the girls would let one of their Dogs be a donor ?

There is also the dog blood donors register here:
http://www.dogblooddonors.com/02_FeedBack/GenMailer.php which I've just found on a search on the forum.
I'm not sure if it is of help for those needing blood or just for donors themselves!

Good luck and keeping everything crossed for him!

Thankyou for the speedy replies - I have just spoke with Lisa and they are taking Alfie to a specialist animal hospital in Manchester where they will have blood available so panic over - thanks again! x

Does anyone know much about auto immune conditions and what his chances of recovery are likely to be?

Luvhandles, my vet has recently been involved in helping set up a canine blood bank.  I don't know the contact details, but if you call  her surgery, I'm sure they will be able to give you contact details.  She's at Medivet Kingston - 020 8546 9600.
edited - just noticed you no longer need blood.

Just to let you all know, Alfie is brighter today - he's had a scan and any internal bleeding has stopped. Blood test results will be back tomorrow so they will hopefully get a definate diagnosis.

Keeping everything crossed for a speedy full recovery for Alfie
Please let us know how he gets on
Maria :)
